SUMMARY:3-Week Summer Faculty Workshop "Deep Analytics for Massive Data"
DESCRIPTION:The Institute for Data Science and Computing (IDSC) is offering a 3-week online (via Zoom) workshop for UM faculty not currently using data science or ML for research/teaching. This workshop provides a comprehensive but accessible introduction to data science and machine learning (ML)\, introducing relevant concepts and tools along with major modules. \n“Deep Analytics for Massive Data: Roadmap Towards a Transformative Knowledge Grammar Using AI\, Machine Learning\, and Data Science”\nMonday 6/7 – Friday 6/25/2021  |  Weekdays 9:00 AM – 12:00 Noon  |   SYLLABUS \nMinimal Prerequisites: College math and some experience in computing or IT are adequate. \nThe workshop uses cloud data and software resources (IBM cloud) in deploying applications. The cloud resources offer broad and complete coverage of topics with hands-on experience. Some initial programming language training is delivered to bring up the workshop participants to speed. At the conclusion\, participants will acquire skills and tools in ML and data science for academic research\, industrial development\, or advanced research. \nTopics include: \n\nThe Landscape of the Fields\nProbability\, Information\, Uncertainty\, Statistics\, and Inference\nLinear Algebra\, Vector Calculation\, and Optimization\nData science/machine learning methodologies\nDatabases and Structured Query Languages\nCloud Computing and Cloud Databases\nUnsupervised and Supervised Learning\nNatural Language Processing\nComputer Vision\nTime-Series Forecasting\n\nApplication Process: Interested faculty should fill out the application form\, including a short paragraph describing how you plan to use the experience from the workshop in your research. Please direct questions to idscengagement@miami.edu. \nApplication Deadline: Friday\, 5/28 by midnight. \nSpace is limited to 15 participants.\nThe workshop format opens with a 90-minute lecture followed by a 90-minute lab administered by a team of IDSC instructors via Zoom. \n  \nPost-Workshop: For the effort of continuing research/teaching in data science and ML\, consultation\, and technical assistance will be available from IDSC. \n
