DESCRIPTION:The Meet a Data Scientist series is a chance to get up close and personal with top-level data science professionals. Join us for a talk with Athena Hadjixenofontos\, Vice President of Data Science for a major financial institution. The purpose of the Meet a Data Scientist lecture series is to introduce our audience to the people behind the data\, their lives\, interests\, career choices\, their work\, and passion for how they can use data to solve grand challenges in their respective fields. Join us as we peer behind the curtain and meet the data scientists behind the data! This lecture series is co-sponsored by the Miami Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) and is free and open to the public. \nRegister Now |  Thursday\, Sept. 30\, 2021\, 4:00-5:00 PM\nTALK TITLE:  Model Development with High Dimensional Data  \nIn some domains\, like natural language processing\, and genomics\, high-dimensional data is inescapable. We will start with some definitions\, then dive into the implications of high-dimensionality for exploratory data analysis\, visualization\, and model building. We will continue with a few examples of how machine learning algorithms react to high-dimensional data\, and approaches to mitigate the limitations of modeling in a high-dimensional space. We will then wrap up by considering some examples of novel approaches that expand our toolset. \nAbout Athena \nUnder Athena’s leadership\, the talented data scientists on her team have developed models that improve risk mitigation efforts across business lines and ensure regulatory compliance. Athena got her PhD in statistical genetics from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and went on to complete her postdoctoral training at Yale University. She lives in Phoenix with her neuroscientist wife\, their curious toddler\, and one very relaxed cat. \n  \n \n
