SUMMARY:Free 2-Day Scientific Computing with Python Workshop 2/17-18
DESCRIPTION:This 2-day intensive virtual workshop is designed to provide a foundation of basic concepts that all programming depends on\, using the general-purpose programming language\, Python\, as an example. There are no prerequisites and the workshop is designed for computer users from beginners to advanced. \n \nThursday + Friday 2/17-18/22 | 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM Course Hours\, Both Days \nRegister Now  | Syllabus  | Pre-workshop Survey\nThis workshop is free and open to UM Faculty\, Staff\, and Students. \nSoftware Carpentry aims to help researchers get their work done in less time and with less pain by teaching them basic research computing skills. This hands-on workshop will cover basic concepts and tools\, including program design\, version control\, data management\, and task automation. Participants will be encouraged to help one another and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems. \n \nWho The course is aimed at graduate students and other researchers. You don’t need to have any previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented at the workshop. \nWhere This training will take place online. The instructors will provide you with the information you will need to connect to this meeting. \nWhen Feb. 17-18\, 2022. Add to your Google Calendar. \n  \n \nInstructors\nCameron Riopelle\, PhD\, Data Services Librarian\nTim Norris PhD\, Data Scientist \n \nHelper\nThilani Samarakoon PhD\, Biomedical Data Librarian \n  \nRequirements Participants must have access to a computer with a Mac\, Linux\, or Windows operating system (not a tablet\, Chromebook\, etc.) that they have administrative privileges on. They should have a few specific software packages installed (listed here). \nAccessibility We are dedicated to providing a positive and accessible learning environment for all. Please notify the instructors in advance of the workshop if you require any accommodations or if there is anything we can do to make this workshop more accessible to you. \nContact Please email Tim Norris tnorris@miami.edu for more information. \nRoles To learn more about the roles at the workshop (who will be doing what)\, refer to the Workshop FAQ \n \nSyllabus\nThe syllabus is available offering Day 1 and Day 2 SCHEDULE\, preparation instructions\, code of conduct\, and pre-event survey. \n  \n  \nData Ethics \n \nAs part of this 2-day workshop\, a guest speaker will join us for a Special Program in Ethics for Scientific Writing and Coding:  Joanna Johnson\, PhD\, Writing Program\, on “Writing and Reproducibility.” For more information\, please see this paper “Best Practices for Scientific Computing“. \n  \n\nSponsored by\nCALDER LIBRARY\nCIMAS\nTHE GRADUATE SCHOOL\nIDSC\nTHE OFFICE OF THE VICE PROVOST FOR RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP\nUM LIBRARIES \n
