SUMMARY:2-Day Scientific Computing with R Workshop 11/18-19
DESCRIPTION:This 2-day intensive online workshop is designed to provide foundational concepts that all programming depends on\, using the R statistical computing platform as an example. There are no prerequisites and the workshop is designed for computer users from beginners to advanced. \n \nThursday & Friday\, November 18-19\, 2021 | 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM Course Hours\, Both Days \nRegister Now  | Syllabus\nThis workshop is free and open to UM Faculty\, Staff\, and Students. \nSoftware Carpentry aims to help researchers get their work done in less time and with less pain by teaching them basic research computing skills. This hands-on workshop will cover basic concepts and tools\, including program design\, version control\, data management\, and task automation. Participants will be encouraged to help one another and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems. \nData Ethics  As part of this 2-day workshop\, guest speaker Kenneth W. Goodman\, PhD\, Director of the UM Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy will join us for a special program on Ethics for Scientific Writing and Coding\, titled “Ethics and Software Standards.” \nFor more information on what we teach and why\, please see our paper “Best Practices for Scientific Computing”. \nWho The course is aimed at graduate students and other researchers. You don’t need to have any previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented at the workshop. \nWhere This training will take place online. The instructors will provide you with the information you will need to connect to this meeting. \nWhen Nov 18-29\, 2021\, 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM Course Hours\, Both Days  |  Add to your Google Calendar. \n  \n \nInstructors\nTim Norris PhD\, Data Scientist\nCameron Riopelle\, PhD\, Data Services Librarian \n \nHelpers\nThilani Samarakoon PhD\, Biomedical Data Librarian\nCameron Hallet\, Marine Science/Computer Science Double Major\nGabriel Odom PhD\, Assistant Professor\, Chen Lab\, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center \n  \nRequirements Participants must have access to a computer with a Mac\, Linux\, or Windows operating system (not a tablet\, Chromebook\, etc.) that they have administrative privileges on. They should have a few specific software packages installed. \nAccessibility We are dedicated to providing a positive and accessible learning environment for all. Please notify the instructors in advance of the workshop if you require any accommodations or if there is anything we can do to make this workshop more accessible to you. \nContact Please email Tim Norris tnorris@miami.edu for more information. \nRoles To learn more about the roles at the workshop (who will be doing what)\, refer to the Workshop FAQ \n  \nSyllabus\n \nThe syllabus is available offering Day 1 and Day 2 SCHEDULE\, preparation instructions\, code of conduct\, and pre-event survey. \n  \nA second 2-day session on Python will be held on December 2-3\, 2021.
