Our goal is to advance scientific knowledge through collaborative projects that can benefit from our institute\u2019s powerful computation and analytic resources. In addition, these grants demonstrate the growing importance of data science and computing in addressing highly complex issues in many fields.<\/p>\n<p>Below are the recipients of this year&#8217;s awards, which includes access to the <strong>Triton Supercomputer<\/strong>. The next round of awards will be offered in fall 2021.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Type 1 Diabetes<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Midhat H. Abdulreda, PhD<\/strong>, Associate Professor of Surgery, <strong>Diabetes Research Institute<\/strong>, received a grant for \u201cVery-Large-Scale Predictive Integration of Multi-Omics Datasets and High-Dimensional Pattern Discoveries of Integrated Biomarker Signatures of Type 1 Diabetes.\u201d\u00a0 This project focuses on biomarker discovery by extracting meaningful information from\u00a0 large datasets obtained from multiple sources.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Atmosphere-Ocean Interactions<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Shane Elipot, PhD<\/strong>, Research Assistant Professor, <strong>Department of Ocean Sciences<\/strong>, will focus on \u201cApplying Machine Learning Tools to Investigate Oceanic Heat Transport and Ocean Currents and Temperatures Predictions.\u201d He will study the relationships between sea surface currents and the sea surface temperatures for a better understanding of oceanic heat transport.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Biological Algorithms<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Amanda Myers, PhD<\/strong>, Associate Professor, <strong>Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science <\/strong>uses large multi-layered molecular datasets to study issues related to Alzheimer\u2019s disease, genetics and other topics. Her project, \u201cBNOmics (Bayesian network reconstruction algorithms and software) Cloud,\u201d aims to developing a user-friendly platform for\u00a0 biology \u2019omics analysis.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Ultra-Durable Concrete<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Luis Ruiz-Pestana, PhD<\/strong>, Research Assistant Professor, <strong>Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering <\/strong>will focus on, \u201cLearning How Colloidal Glasses Age: A Step Towards the Rational Design of Ultra-Durable Concrete.\u201d The project could help lower cement consumption by extending the lifetime of infrastructure with positive environmental results.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Viruses and Marine Bacteria<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Cynthia Silveira, PhD<\/strong>, Assistant Professor, <strong>Department of Biology<\/strong>, will study the interactions of marine microbial communities in her project, \u201cGlobal Oceanographic Patterns of Viruses Infecting Marine Bacteria.\u201d Her goal is to better understand the molecular mechanisms as well as their ecosystem outcomes in coral-associated microbiomes.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Predicting Glaucoma Progression<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Swarup Swaminathan, PhD<\/strong>, Assistant Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology, and Cataract and Glaucoma Specialist, <strong>Bascom Palmer Eye Institute<\/strong>, will advance his imaging research in glaucoma through his project, \u201cBayesian Linear Mixed Modeling in Predicting Glaucomatous Disease Progression.\u201d He will use data from electronic health records and high-performance computing-dependent statistical methodologies to develop improved personalized estimates of glaucomatous progression.<\/p>\n<p>These six projects were chosen from a total of 13 applications in a wide variety of fields on all three campuses.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to all recipients!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-263 size-thumbnail alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Ben-150x106.jpg\" alt=\"Ben\" width=\"150\" height=\"106\" \/><br \/>\n<br clear=\"all\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Ben Kirtman, PhD<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;\">idsc deputy director\u00a0 |\u00a0 director, idsc earth systems<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For further information on the IDSC Grants Program, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/grants-programs\"><strong>idsc.miami.edu\/grants-program<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from the deputy director To support data-intensive scientific projects in multiple disciplines, IDSC has launched new Grants Programs, with awards to six University of Miami researchers.
