{"id":1024,"date":"2021-02-01T11:54:42","date_gmt":"2021-02-01T11:54:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/?p=1024"},"modified":"2021-08-23T13:15:25","modified_gmt":"2021-08-23T13:15:25","slug":"spring-2021-student-xr-fund","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/spring-2021-student-xr-fund\/","title":{"rendered":"Student XR Fund"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/xr.miami.edu\/_assets\/images\/imfa1.jpg\" alt=\"Students use the Hololens\" width=\"238\" height=\"260\" \/>The University of Miami<a href=\"https:\/\/xr.miami.edu\/index.html\"><strong> XR Initiative<\/strong><\/a> is changing the way we teach, collaborate, and research.\u00a0 This new technological paradigm shift is putting us at the forefront of innovation in the field of immersive media.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the XR Initiative, a competition for students who are passionate about virtual and augmented reality and have an idea for an innovative application using these new technologies is being held.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A maximum of $1,000 will be awarded per team.<\/li>\n<li>Funds can be used in any way you want. Equipment, hire a developer, or pay yourself and your team.<\/li>\n<li>All UM students (undergrad and grad) are eligible to apply<\/li>\n<li>Teams will be given preference (individual applicants will be considered)<\/li>\n<li>Multi-school collaborations will be given preference<\/li>\n<li>All teams must have at least one UM student, but may also include students from other universities as well<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"row generic-panel\">\n<div class=\"interior-text small-12 small-offset-0 medium-12 medium-offset-0 column medium-column-half large-column-3quarter end\">\n<h3 class=\"center-program_3\">Resources and Events<\/h3>\n<p>All awarded teams have access to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Workshops<\/strong>\u00a0 Two workshops focused on best practices in prototyping led by industry experts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Equipment\u00a0 <\/strong>When possible, teams will be given access to key partners who can provide access to equipment and tools<\/li>\n<li><strong>Showcase<\/strong>\u00a0 All funded projects will produce a demo video and participate in an event at the end of the semester to showcase your applications to the UM community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"center-program_3\">How To Participate<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Awards will be granted twice per year (Fall and Spring semesters).<\/li>\n<li>Approx. 5 to 7 teams will receive awards.<\/li>\n<li>All funds will be distributed directly to the team lead.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"center-program_3\">Key Dates, Spring &#8217;21:<\/h3>\n<div><strong>Applications Due:<\/strong> Friday, March 5, 2021 at 5:00 PM<br \/>\n<strong>Mandatory Workshop 1:<\/strong> Friday, March 12, 2021 (3:30 &#8211; 5:00 PM) **Virtual<br \/>\n<strong>Mandatory Workshop 2:<\/strong> Friday, April 9, 2021 (3:30 &#8211; 5:00 PM) **Virtual<\/p>\n<div><strong>Final Showcase:<\/strong> Friday, May 7, 2021 (3:30 &#8211; 5:00 PM) **Virtual<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Apply Today: \u00a0<strong><a class=\"button onblack orange stagsansbold\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdEUERfczKx-ObM7jmEpM4IWGgE0bJ9AqoCsaH9ROvGWwDv8w\/viewform?usp=sf_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">APPLICATION FORM<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-header\"><strong>About the XR Initiative<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"text-body\">\n<p>The XR Initiative serves as an interdisciplinary community of faculty, researchers, students, and staff who have a common interest in using XR (augmented, virtual, and mixed reality) technologies to pursue innovative solutions in their field. We are currently active in the fields of architecture, health care, sustainability, climate change, art history, behavioral research, human-computer interfaces, UI\/UX, new media, and narrative\/storytelling research.<\/p>\n<p>The XR Initiative has established a strong presence across campus in collaborations with the<strong> Institute for Data Science and Computing<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/gordoncenter.miami.edu\/\"><strong>The Gordon Center for Research in Medical Education<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.miami.edu\/\"><strong>UM Libraries<\/strong><\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowe.miami.edu\/\"><strong>Lowe Art Museum<\/strong><\/a>.
