{"id":1030,"date":"2021-02-01T11:51:01","date_gmt":"2021-02-01T11:51:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/?p=1030"},"modified":"2021-08-23T13:15:42","modified_gmt":"2021-08-23T13:15:42","slug":"spring-2021-interns-build-data-science-skills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/spring-2021-interns-build-data-science-skills\/","title":{"rendered":"Interns Build Their Data Science Skills in Multi-Institution Partnership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A cooperative international partnership led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/welcome.miami.edu\/\"><strong>University of Miami<\/strong><\/a> Institute of Data Science and Computing (IDSC) has opened the door to new experiences and opportunities for four U.S. and Canadian interns.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-643 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Olivia-Shurtleff-circle.png\" alt=\"Olivia Shurtleff\" width=\"234\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Olivia-Shurtleff-circle.png 234w, https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Olivia-Shurtleff-circle-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Olivia-Shurtleff-circle-60x60.png 60w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/> During the fall semester program, conducted with Canada&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/ontariotechu.ca\/\"><strong>Ontario Tech University<\/strong><\/a> (OTU) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwaterloo.ca\/\"><strong>University of Waterloo<\/strong><\/a>, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghsystems.com\/\"><strong>GlassHouse Systems<\/strong><\/a> (GHS) introduced the interns to real-world projects that developed their programming skills, and ability to harness the powerful capabilities of UM&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/triton\/\"><strong>Triton supercomputer<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I learned so much during the co-op program with the University of Miami,&#8221; said <strong>Olivia Shurtleff<\/strong>, an OTU undergraduate who is majoring in mechanical engineering. &#8220;I was able to develop my programming skills in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.python.org\/\"><strong>Python<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/rstudio.com\/\"><strong>RStudio<\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/gitforwindows.org\/\"><strong>Git BASH<\/strong><\/a>. I thoroughly enjoyed my time and am incredibly thankful for this opportunity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-645 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Hounsh-Munshi-circle.jpg\" alt=\"Hounsh Munshi\" width=\"288\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Hounsh-Munshi-circle.jpg 288w, https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Hounsh-Munshi-circle-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Hounsh-Munshi-circle-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" \/>As part of the program, the interns took part in <strong>COVID-19 analytics projects<\/strong> that introduced them to high-performance cloud computing and analytics experience in several programming languages, under the guidance of <strong>Hounsh Munshi<\/strong>, Graduate Research Assistant, IDSC Advanced Computing, and <strong>Pedro Davila<\/strong>, Systems Administrator, IDSC Advanced Computing. &#8220;By the end of the program, the interns were able to statistically summarize the international state of COVID-19, and perform several deeper analytics looking at growth rates, trends, and other statistical indices,&#8221; said Hounsh.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-646 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Pedro-Davila-circle.jpg\" alt=\"Pedro Davila\" width=\"234\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Pedro-Davila-circle.jpg 234w, https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Pedro-Davila-circle-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Pedro-Davila-circle-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A second data science project involved the <a href=\"https:\/\/ace.ontariotechu.ca\/about_ace\/index.php\"><strong>Automotive Centre of Excellence<\/strong><\/a> (ACE) <a href=\"https:\/\/ace.ontariotechu.ca\/testing-chambers\/climatic-wind-tunnel.php\"><strong>Climatic Wind Tunnel<\/strong><\/a> at Ontario Tech University. The interns used advanced analytical techniques to determine the distributions of the shape of water droplets as they came into contact with a high-velocity airstream. &#8220;This has several implications in meteorology, as well as utility for sensors for self-driving cars,&#8221; said Hounsh.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-647 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Eric-Whalls-circle.jpg\" alt=\"Eric Whalls\" width=\"234\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Eric-Whalls-circle.jpg 234w, https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Eric-Whalls-circle-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Eric-Whalls-circle-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/>Intern <strong>Eric Whalls<\/strong>, a student in Engineering Operations and Support at ACE, said the partnership with UM was a great learning opportunity. &#8220;The ACE facility produces a large amount of data, and access to the Triton supercomputer allows us to work through more computationally intensive workloads. The Triton supercomputer also has a sophisticated and user-friendly development environment, with tools focused on data science\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.anaconda.com\/\"><strong>Anaconda<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/jupyter.org\/\"><strong>JupyterLab<\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/rstudio.com\/\"><strong>RStudio<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> I really appreciate being able to work with the people at the University of Miami, and I&#8217;m excited to continue to collaborate with them moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-644 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Emery-Sutherland-circle.jpg\" alt=\"Emery Sutherland\" width=\"235\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Emery-Sutherland-circle.jpg 235w, https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Emery-Sutherland-circle-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Emery-Sutherland-circle-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 235px) 100vw, 235px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The other two interns\u2014<strong>Emery Sutherland<\/strong>,\u00a0a student in the Engineering Department at the <strong>University of New Mexico<\/strong>, and <strong>Andrew Moniz<\/strong>\u00a0(photo unavailable), a student at the <strong>University of Waterloo<\/strong>\u2014also learned new skills from the four-month virtual learning experience. \u201cI was able to network with UM and ACE&#8217;s faculty members in the fields of data science, computer science, and computational fluid dynamics,\u201d said Andrew. \u201cI was exposed to data sets that helped contribute to a better understanding of COVID-19 and took part in workshops that helped me expand my knowledge in coding. It was a pleasure to take part in this co-op experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The interns were offered a variety of training opportunities, including an introduction to basic <strong>Linux<\/strong> and the <strong>Power 9 based Cluster<\/strong>, along with \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.python.org\/\"><strong>Python<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.r-project.org\/about.html\"><strong>R<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jupyter.org\/\">Jupyter Notebook<\/a>,<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/rstudio.com\/\"><strong>RStudio<\/strong><\/a>. They were able to load and analyze updated time series worldwide data of reported cases for COVID-19 from the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cran.r-project.org\/web\/packages\/covid19.analytics\/index.html\">data repository<\/a> <\/strong>at <a href=\"https:\/\/systems.jhu.edu\/\"><strong>Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science and Engineering<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>IDSC mentors for this internship program included (left to right) <strong>Joel Zysman<\/strong>, Director, IDSC Advanced Computing; <strong>Amin Sarafraz<\/strong>, PhD, Associate Scientist, IDSC Software Engineering, and Research Assistant Professor, College of Engineering; and the IDSC Advanced Computing team.
