{"id":1192,"date":"2021-08-30T01:56:17","date_gmt":"2021-08-30T01:56:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/?p=1192"},"modified":"2022-01-28T15:06:40","modified_gmt":"2022-01-28T15:06:40","slug":"new-faculty-positions-and-funding-opportunities-to-promote-data-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/new-faculty-positions-and-funding-opportunities-to-promote-data-science\/","title":{"rendered":"New Faculty Positions and Funding Opportunities to Promote Data Science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;\">from the deputy director<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Proposals Sought for IDSC Data Science Grants<\/h4>\n<p>If you are exploring social, behavioral, and ethical issues, now is the time to apply for IDSC\u2019s grant program, \u201cExpanding the Use of Collaborative Data Science at UM.\u201d\u00a0 We are now seeking proposals on using data science to foster breakthroughs in a variety of disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>For the 2021-22 academic year, IDSC is particularly interested in two areas of focus:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Using data science to understand social and behavioral processes, such as machine learning of social networks, as well as the impact of data science on social processes, such as how facial identification interfaces with criminal justice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Understanding the intersection of ethics and data science. For instance, can data science reduce, eliminate or manage bias and discrimination? Do software engineering standards and processes support explainability and privacy protection? Can innovative governance reduce social injustice in specific areas?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While these two focus areas are emphasized in this fall\u2019s call for proposals, <strong>submissions in other areas of data science will also be considered<\/strong>. Our goal is to advance scientific knowledge through collaborative projects that can benefit from our Institute\u2019s powerful computation and analytic resources.<\/p>\n<p>Grant applicants may request up to $20,000 and 1M Service Units (SUs) to be used for high-performance computing at IDSC.
