Goodman<\/strong>, PhD, who is also the Founder and Director of the UM Miller School of Medicine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/bioethics.miami.edu\/\">Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy<\/a> and the Director of the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ethics.miami.edu\/\">Ethics Programs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-561\" src=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Ken-Goodman-circle.jpg\" alt=\"Kenneth W. Goodman\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Ken-Goodman-circle.jpg 240w, https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Ken-Goodman-circle-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Ken-Goodman-circle-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>\u201cArtificial intelligence and machine learning are making vital contributions to healthcare, business, transportation, and a host of other disciplines,\u201d Goodman said. \u201cTo avoid faulty assumptions or inherent biases, ethical concerns must be considered right from the start, including the documentation and provenance of data, as well as its fitness for the intended purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Goodman will serve as an advisor to the nationwide NIH <a href=\"https:\/\/datascience.nih.gov\/artificial-intelligence\/aim-ahead\">Artificial Intelligence\/Machine Learning Consortium to Advance Health Equity and Researcher Diversity<\/a> (AIM-AHEAD), whose goals include reducing health disparities and building databases that more accurately reflect the diverse U.S. population.<\/p>\n<p>Goodman\u2019s appointment follows a <a href=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/nih-aim-ahead-health-disparities\/\">recent NIH grant for IDSC to spearhead the AIM-AHEAD program\u2019s infrastructure core<\/a>. \u201cMost of our current data is biased\u00a0 and the people collecting this data are often not representative of all minorities and cultural differences,\u201d said Nick Tsinoremas, PhD, IDSC Founding Director and UM Vice Provost for Research Computing and Data. \u201cWe want these biases eliminated, but we also want to create an infrastructure that encourages minority-serving institutions to do this research to create more equitable or unbiased approaches.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Ethics, AI, and Medicine<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The growing use of AI and machine learning in medicine and health requires attention to ethical issues, said Goodman. For instance, access of a patient\u2019s electronic health record (EHR) should be simple for physicians, nurses, and patients, but well protected from cyber criminals. \u201cWe need to balance different goals, such as protecting patient privacy and security, while granting access to providers who need that data and who use that information to improve health outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another ethical issue involves the use of AI-driven text generators, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/blog\/gpt-3-apps\/\">GPT-3 by research lab OpenAI<\/a>, in the medical field. \u201cAcademic institutions are watching this field closely to be sure students are not using these tools in their own writing,\u201d he said. \u201cHowever, a well-regulated and transparent AI-driven text generator can be helpful in many contexts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In medicine, for example, physicians could use AI tools to produce accurate, well-written patient reports, reducing demands on their time while potentially improving patient engagement. \u201cWe are planning a UM conference on this topic next year,\u201d said Goodman.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Leadership on Ethics Issues<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1964\" src=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Ethics-Medicine-and-Information-Technology-book-cover.jpg\" alt=\"Ethics, Medicine, and Information Technology book cover\" width=\"180\" height=\"270\" \/>In 1997, Goodman co-founded the <a href=\"https:\/\/amia.org\/community\/working-groups\/ethical-legal-and-social-issues\">Ethical, Legal and Social Issues Working Group<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/amia.org\/\">American Medical Informatics Association<\/a> (AMIA), prior to publishing his seminal book on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/books\/ethics-computing-and-medicine\/CCAA226648103E7B820A95862F3F0565\">Ethics, Computing, and Medicine<\/a>.
