Are there ways to depolarize these networks and bring individuals closer together?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1285 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Chaoming-Song-circle.jpg\" alt=\"University of Miami Physics Professor Chaoming Song\" width=\"252\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Chaoming-Song-circle.jpg 252w, https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Chaoming-Song-circle-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Chaoming-Song-circle-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/people.miami.edu\/profile\/f45d5b9d536437ac79b75f5344f6f605\">Chaoming Song<\/a><\/strong>, Associate Professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/physics.as.miami.edu\/\">Physics<\/a>, developed a modeling framework for the emergence of polarized and non-polarized networks in a recent study using the computing resources of the University of Miami\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/\">Institute for Data Science and Computing<\/a> (IDSC). \u201cWe used <a href=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/platforms\/advanced-computing\/\">IDSC\u2019s supercomputing resources<\/a> to test our data sets against the model,\u201d said Song. \u201cRather than look at a few hundred nodes on my laptop, we were able to scale up to 10-100 times larger size, thanks to IDSC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new study, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.aps.org\/prl\/accepted\/2207dY2fF1e1988b05887d56e10406dd65731275d\">The Emergence of Polarization in Coevolving Networks<\/a>,\u201d was published recently in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.aps.org\/prl\/\">Physical Review Letters<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/med.miami.edu\/\">Miller School of Medicine<\/a> co-authors were<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jiazhen-liu-8b3641141\/\"><strong> Jiazhen Liu<\/strong><\/a>, Ph.D., who recently completed his PhD at UM;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/shengda-huang\/\"><strong> Shengda Huang<\/strong><\/a>, PhD graduate student; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wri.org\/profile\/nate-aden\"><strong>Nathan Aden<\/strong><\/a>, MS, former graduate teaching assistant; as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/physics.columbian.gwu.edu\/neil-johnson\"><strong>Neil Johnson<\/strong><\/a>, Ph.D. Professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/physics.columbian.gwu.edu\/\">Physics, George Washington University<\/a> (pictured L to R, below).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur results potentially impact the understanding of human society across disciplines, including social and political science,\u201d Song said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1830\" src=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Jiazhen-Liu_Shengda-Huang_Nate-Aden_Neil-Johnson-1024x544.jpg\" alt=\"Jiazhen Liu, Shengda Huang, Nate Aden, and Neil Johnson\" width=\"632\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Jiazhen-Liu_Shengda-Huang_Nate-Aden_Neil-Johnson-1024x544.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Jiazhen-Liu_Shengda-Huang_Nate-Aden_Neil-Johnson-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Jiazhen-Liu_Shengda-Huang_Nate-Aden_Neil-Johnson-768x408.jpg 768w, https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Jiazhen-Liu_Shengda-Huang_Nate-Aden_Neil-Johnson-320x170.jpg 320w, https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Jiazhen-Liu_Shengda-Huang_Nate-Aden_Neil-Johnson-480x255.jpg 480w, https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Jiazhen-Liu_Shengda-Huang_Nate-Aden_Neil-Johnson-800x425.jpg 800w, https:\/\/idsc.miami.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Jiazhen-Liu_Shengda-Huang_Nate-Aden_Neil-Johnson.jpg 1470w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 632px) 100vw, 632px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><strong>A Recurring Phenomenon<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Polarization is a regularly occurring phenomenon in social systems, according to Song. \u201cIf two people have a similar political outlook, for example, they are more likely to connect with each other,\u201d he added. \u201cIn social media, we frequently see two networks of groups with opposite opinions that coevolve at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But those co-evolving structures are dynamic and can change for a variety of reasons. \u201cUnderstanding those changes may provide clues to slowing down polarization between two opposite groups,\u201d Song said. \u201cFor instance, online conversations about common topics like the weather, travel, or sports can bring people together.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Developing a Model<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>While coevolving polarization network models have been proposed, the UM researchers were the first to develop a stable bipolarized framework with a scaling structure for both opinion dynamics and network evolution. \u201cCoevolving network models are infamously difficult to solve due to the complicated interplay between opinion and network structure,\u201d said Song. \u201cOur quantitative model\u2014validated by numerical simulation and empirical measurements\u2014accounts for three empirically observed phases, including polarization, partial polarization, and depolarization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To develop their model, the researchers drew on two related data sets. \u00a0The first consisted of the 500 most shared online domains on Facebook, classified as either hard content (FBHC) or soft content (FBSC). The second set consisted of 1,490 blogs and 19,090 references in the blogosphere. The researchers then computed the mean score of political leanings for each domain or blog from \u22121 (liberal) to +1 (conservative).<\/p>\n<p>In creating scatter plots depicting the opinion distribution for the data sets, Song and his team found that the opinion distributions in two politics-related data sets (Facebook hard content and blogosphere) were &#8220;U&#8221; shaped, suggesting a polarization phase. In contrast, opinions in the Facebook soft content data set had an inverse-U shape, indicating a depolarization phase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough we now have a new model, there is still plenty of work to do,\u201d said Song. \u201cFuture investigations are needed to carry our polarization framework forward.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What drives the polarization of political opinions on social media?
