Justin Gammage, an expert in operational artificial intelligence (AI), has joined the Frost Institute for Data Science and Computing (IDSC) as director of partnerships with local, national, and international stakeholders from business, industry, and the community.
“I will be building collaborations that leverage the University of Miami’s Internationally recognized faculty and research staff, along with IDSC’s world-class advanced computing infrastructure,” said Justin, who recently moved to Miami from the Toronto area. “It’s exciting to be in South Florida’s high-energy, multicultural environment right at the center of the Americas.”
“I want IDSC to serve as a pipeline to the innovation
resources at the University of Miami”
Justin plans to collaborate with the region’s economic development organizations, chambers of commerce, small start-ups, and large multinationals. “I want IDSC to serve as a pipeline to the innovation resources at the University of Miami,” he said. “We have specialized degrees and training in data science and computing, with the ability to offer research and support services for non-experts in the field.” For example, a South Florida company might have a great idea for creating an innovative product or service. “At IDSC we can help build, test, and validate machine-learning models, develop a proof of concept, and accelerate the commercialization process,” Justin said. “We bring a full set of options to potential partners.”
In addition to his role at IDSC, Justin is also co-founder of Illuminex AI, a company specializing in operational AI for the advanced manufacturing and aerospace sectors. Before joining IDSC, he was the senior executive advisor on strategic research priorities to the vice president of research and innovation at Ontario Tech University in Oshawa.
Prior to joining Ontario Tech in 2015, he spent 14 years working in industry on assignments that included production, product engineering, and research. As chief scientist for General Motors Research in Canada, Justin was responsible for developing and managing a broad portfolio of innovation projects with leading research labs and university faculty. He holds a Ph.D. in materials science from McMaster University and is a registered Professional Engineer.
“I’ve been eagerly looking forward to joining the burgeoning #miamitech and University of Miami communities,” Justin shared. “The friendships I’ve developed so far, ideas that are emerging, and everyone’s passionate commitment to the community are inspiring. When I’m not at work, I’ve been enjoying time out on the water, exploring the many cultural communities, parks, and beaches, and keeping my ‘cold weather gear’ in permanent storage.”
“As IDSC expands its reach into the community,” he added, I look forward to my part in advancing a lot of the great work that has already been started, and seeing where scientific innovation will take the U.”
