Assistant/Associate Professor
in Interactive Media
The University of Miami School of Communication Department of Interactive Media invites applications for permanent, full-time, nine-month, tenure-track, or tenure-eligible faculty positions at the Assistant Professor and Associate Professor levels. The candidate must possess or expect to receive a Ph.D. in Human-Computer Interaction, Human-Centered Computing, Communication, Computer Science, or a related discipline by the beginning of the appointment, August 15, 2023.
Successful candidates are expected to conduct research adjacent to communication. Areas of specialization may include: specific applications (e.g. virtual reality, augmented or mixed reality, computer vision, social impact games, serious and educational games, data visualization, intelligent agents, machine learning, etc.); social justice and bias; deepfakes and trustworthiness; bots and social engineering of communication, computational communication, and classic Human-Machine Communication (HMC) approaches broadened to include Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Human-Robot Interaction (HRI).
Candidates are expected to develop and maintain a recognized research program. Exceptional candidates in related areas will be considered. The selected candidate will be expected to teach classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The faculty member will be housed primarily in the newly formed Department of Interactive Media and will also have responsibilities in the Institute for Data Science and Computing (IDSC). The Interactive Media department is a multidisciplinary research and teaching community encompassing virtual reality, games, user experience, interaction design, data visualization, and allied disciplines offering two minors, a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Fine Arts. IDSC is a newly created university research organization rapidly growing its capacity. IDSC focuses on defining new knowledge areas and disciplines that can take advantage of data and computation, enhancing the use of data and computational methods in existing disciplines at the University of Miami, and helping to educate the public at large about the intelligent and responsible use of data by developing programs at all educational levels.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Doctoral degree in a natural science or engineering discipline, or computer science/engineering required.
Experience: Minimum of 1 year postdoctoral experience in computational science and engineering, experience in research facilitation, and application support services. Experience in grant development is a plus. Research experience in computational chemistry, bioinformatics, or other engineering disciplines is preferred. Appropriate combination of relevant education and/or experience may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

- Experience with bash scripting, high level languages such as C, C++, Fortran, and awareness or experience in data science using Python or similar programming environments.
- Experience with Perl or other scripting language.
- Demonstrated knowledge of parallel and distributed computing technologies including programming experience in MPI, OpenMP, Hadoop, Python, and related tools.
- Familiarity with back up and disaster recovery technologies.
- Experience or understanding in cloud computing, containers, and virtualization technologies.
- Good interpersonal communication skills and written communication skills.
- Ability to work in an office and datacenter environment.
- Demonstrated ability to interact positively with and manage varied technical personalities.

Systems Administrator
IDSC Advanced Computing
Required Experience:
Minimum 3 years of relevant experience with:

- Managing Linux systems in a networked environment.
- System and related network administration of complex computer systems, specifically RHEL/Centos Linux systems and Linux clusters.
- Scripting (Bash and/or Python).
- Providing end-user support, particularly with ticket tracking systems.
Desired Experience/Knowledge:
-
- Knowledge of scientific programming languages such as C/C++, Fortran, CUDA, Python, MATLAB, R, etc.
- Familiar with science data formats; NetCDF, HDF5.
- Knowledge of software packages related to cluster computing, such as modules environment, spack, OpenMP, MPI, Intel Parallel Studio, etc.
- Familiarity with HPC network interconnects (Mellanox InfiniBand, Intel Omni-Path).
- Familiarity with stateless and/or diskless server provisioning.
- Experience with parallel file systems (GPFS, or Lustre).
- Experience with one or more areas of computational science such as machine learning, data analytics, or software development.
- Experience with batch queueing systems, preferably LSF.
- Familiarity with configuration management using tools such as Ansible and Git.
- Knowledge of or experience in networking systems and software, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, PXE, LDAP, and NFS.
Working conditions are as follows:

- Closed computer office workspace and data center environment.
- Performs out-of-hours maintenance and on-call support.
- Travel between campuses and data centers is required.
