Fall 2023, From the Director

Accelerating IDSC’s Growth Trajectory

by Helen Gynell

from the director

This has been a remarkable year for the Frost Institute for Data Science and Computing (IDSC) and our growth is accelerating in many ways. First, core faculty has grown significantly, including several joint appointments with the School of Communication and College of Engineering.

More students are enrolling and taking part in our year-round learning and training offerings. The Master of Science in Data Science program has grown to 20-plus students and we will increase enrollments this year to accommodate the strong demand for data science knowledge and skills in the academic, business, and institutional sectors. A collaboration with the Graduate School will launch an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in computing that will serve the needs of the entire University.

Research funding from federal agencies, business partners, and philanthropic donors continues to rise. It is a testimony to our great team that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) chose IDSC to lead the infrastructure core of the Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Consortium to Advance Health Equity and Researcher Diversity (AIM-AHEAD)*. This national program will reduce health disparities by creating new algorithms and health care databases that more accurately reflect the diverse U.S. population.

To advance that goal, IDSC has received additional grants to work with Florida Atlantic University’s (FAU) Schmidt College of Medicine and the Caridad Center, Inc.—which serves uninsured and underserved children and families of Palm Beach County—to improve their electronic health records, so that they can be used more often for research. We are also creating a pilot program with Florida Memorial University (FMU) and Miami Dade College to train 40 faculty members and students to use AI and machine-learning techniques in their clinical practice.

In the private sector, IDSC is collaborating with our Industry Advisory Board to support data science education and R+D initiatives that bring University of Miami resources to the South Florida community. We have expanded our outreach team to reach new partners and magnify our impact on the region.

As we begin a new academic year, I hope you will join us on September 28 to celebrate our inauguralIDSC Day, as we enable discovery and continue our exciting journey into an ever brighter future.

Thank you!
