“Simply adopting the latest technology is not enough.”

Artificial intelligence is advancing at a remarkable pace, and organizations everywhere are trying to determine what it means for them. New tools are appearing almost daily, but simply adopting the latest technology is not enough. Organizations need to understand what these tools can do, where they can fall short, and how to use them effectively and responsibly.

That is why the Frost Institute for Data Science and Computing (IDSC) is expanding its work both across the University of Miami and beyond our walls. With growing extramural funding, new senior appointments, and continued faculty recruitment, we are building the expertise and capacity needed to advance research, strengthen education, and work more closely with industry and community partners.

A major part of that effort is outreach and training. Through professional development programs and partnerships throughout Florida and beyond, IDSC faculty are helping organizations understand the opportunities, limitations, and risks that come with AI. We are also helping them address important questions surrounding privacy, security, ethics, and regulation. These relationships are a two-way street. Our partners bring us real challenges from their industries and communities, and those challenges help shape our research, training, and hands-on work. In many cases, we can move beyond general guidance to collaborate on research, prototyping, and the testing of solutions designed for their particular needs. I believe that is one of IDSC’s greatest strengths.

As a neutral, interdisciplinary academic institute, we are not trying to sell a product or promote one tool over another. We are focused on helping our partners understand the technology and use it to solve real problems.

The question is no longer how much AI an organization is using. The question today is what can AI actually help us accomplish? That is the measure that matters, and at IDSC, it drives everything we do.
