Systems and Data Engineering

Chris Mader

Systems and Data Engineering

The University of Miami Frost Institute for Data Science and Computing (IDSC) Systems and Data Engineering team are professional software engineers who actively seek collaborative partners for new and innovative software application and systems development projects. The team has developed applications and software systems to support work in clinical research, drug discovery, genomics, mapping, and urban planning, observational biology/ecology, and the digital humanities.

IDSC Systems and Data Engineering offers expertise for collaborators who need to include novel software systems as part of their projects, including expert personnel for inclusion in grant proposals, and the development of prototypes or initial analysis in preparation for proposal submission.

Chris Mader

Christopher Mader | Director

Chris Mader joined the University of Miami in 2007 to lead the IDSC (then the “Center for Computational Science” CCS) software engineering efforts. He has been developing software systems for scientific applications and leading development teams for over 20 years at a number of research organizations including Stanford University, The Institute for Genomic Research (now J. Craig Venter Institute), and The Scripps Research Institute, as well as a variety of commercial organizations.

Chris’s interests include the development of rapid and progressive search applications, interactive systems for exploring geospatial data, methods for 3D reconstruction and remote sensing, and, the application of data science and digital technology to problems of social justice and economic development, as well as the ethical use of these systems.

Julio Perez

Julio Perez | Manager

Julio C. Perez-Baez received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1989 from the Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra in the Dominican Republic and joined the University of Miami Frost Institute for Data Science and Computing (formerly the “Center for Computational Science”) in 2013. Currently, he is the Manager of the IDSC Systems and Data Engineering Group. Julio is a result-oriented information systems specialist with more than 25 years of extensive experience leading software development teams in all stages of software development life cycle and project management for organizations ranging from entrepreneurial to Fortune 500, such as PepsiCo and Sony Corporation. His expertise is in Server-Based Distributed Computing and Web Technologies. Julio’s current interests include AI and its Machine Learning subset as applied to Data Science, Service-Oriented Architecture, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Deepthi Puram

Deepthi Puram | Manager

Deepthi Puram joined IDSC (formerly the “Center for Computational Science”) in 2008 as Senior Software Engineer. She has 15 years of extensive experience in leading teams through analysis, design, construction, testing, and implementation of software projects. Her primary focus is on implementing architecture that helps organizations effectively analyze, process, and visualize structured and unstructured data, and her areas of expertise include developing web-based applications using Java/J2EE technologies, processing data using big data technologies, and implementation of interoperating information systems using a service-oriented architectural approach. Deepthi has a Master’s degree in Information Systems from Osmania University in India, and a Master’s degree in Business Administration specializing in Operations Management from Florida Atlantic University. She is a Certified ScrumMaster.
