“Visualizing Data: Veracity, Accuracy, Accountability” a virtual discussion with Prof. Alberto Cairo, PhD, will be held on Friday, October 9, 2020, 12:00-1:00 p.m. as part of the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy monthly conference series Dialogues in Research Ethics.

Data visualization—the visual depiction of data through charts, graphs, maps, and diagrams—is becoming increasingly important as a tool for exploration and communication. Indeed, data
visualization should be seen as a significant component of the responsible conduct of research. However, it is not usually taught formally to scientists, statisticians, analysists, or other professionals who use it on a regular basis. This presentation aims to fill that gap with tips about how to make good decisions when designing data visualizations and about how to make such visualizations more compelling and informative.

Prof. Cairo is the Knight Chair in Visual Journalism at UM’s School of Communication and IDSC Director of Visualization and Information Design. Prof. Cairo is a journalist and has been Director of visualization at news publications in Spain, his country of origin, Brazil, and the United States. He is also a permanent visualization consultant with Google and has provided training and visualization design services for the Congressional Budget Office, the U.S. National Guard, the CDC, EuroStat, the European Union, and numerous other companies and entities in more than 20 countries. His most recent book is How Charts Lie: Getting Smarter About Visual Information (W.W. Norton, 2019).
