The dramatic and terrifying events that occurred during the first decade of the 21st Century drew in the scientific and engineering resources of the nation in many ways. For example, NIST responded by conducting an exhaustive study of the World Trade Center building collapses and produced standards for biometric identification, mail irradiations to detoxify anthrax, nuclear material detectors at U.S. borders, and protective measures against cyber attacks. NSF responded by supporting research interrupted by Hurricane Katrina and modeling the several violent natural disasters that occurred during the decade.
