The University Research Informatics Data Environment, also known as “URIDE“, is a large scale data services atmosphere where de-identified data from multiple clinical and research sciences systems can be explored preparatory to research, prospective and retrospective analysis. The goal of URIDE is to provide a single, secure, exploratory environment for all clinically and scientifically derived data for research at the University. Collaboration to Design Smart City Announced

In March 2016, the University of Miami announced a hemispheric collaboration between the Institute for Data Science and Computing and the Yucatán State Government’s Information Technologies Innovation Center known as “Heuristic“, located in the Yucatán Science and Technology Park. Taking that collaboration a step further, the UM School of Architecture (SoA), its Responsive Architecture and Design Lab (RAD-UM Lab), and IDSC will come together to design “Zenciti“, a smart city next to the science park.

Notification: Pegasus Maintenance 6/29-7/1/2016

Advanced Computing will implement filesystem/GPFS upgrades and perform maintenance from June 29 through July 01, 2016. The Pegasus supercomputer will be shut down on Wednesday, June 29 at 05:00pm and remain down until Friday, July 01 at 10:00am. Any unfinished jobs will be terminated and users logged off. Ben Kirtman appointed Director of CIMAS

Dr. Ben Kirtman, program director of CCS’s Climate & Environmental Hazards focus area, and professor of atmospheric science at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS), has been appointed director of CIMAS, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies. Based at RSMAS, CIMAS brings together the research and educational resources of ten partner universities to increase scientific understanding of Earth’s oceans and atmosphere within the context of NOAA’s mission. Nautilus Middle School Visits the Viz Lab

CCS hosted Nautilus Middle School, the “Home of the Sharks”, an International Baccalaureate World School located on Miami Beach, in the Viz Lab on Friday, May 20th, for a demonstration of the powers of the 2D and 3D walls. Hosted by Giancarlo Espinoza, one of CCS’s exceptional Advanced Computing Systems Administrators, the forty-plus students appeared to enjoy the presentation and asked lots of questions. We are in the era of Big Data. Data is being generated by everything around us all the time. The extreme popularity of social media pushes the scale of data even higher in volume, speed and variety. It becomes more and more critical to develop and apply new big data technologies to collect, process, understand data in a super efficient way. New big data systems and analytic algorithms have been developed and deployed extensively in industrial and academic areas. This free Lunch and Learn session (open to UM Faculty, Staff, and Students) will start with an overview of the big data technologies in Hadoop eco-system and the popular tools in big data collection, processing and analysis.
