UM to Lead NMME Phase-2 Climate Prediction Project

The University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) recently received funding for a project that will improve climate predictions, give better insight to drivers of climate change, and create better climate models and data. Dr. Ben Kirtman, Associate Dean of Research at RSMAS, and Climate & Environmental Hazards Program Director at the Institute for Data Science and Computing, will serve as Principal Investigator for this project. This grant symbolizes a new level of involvement for the University of Miami in the development of powerful climate forecasting tools. City of Miami Proclaims Rodolphe el-Khoury Day

Back on March 25th, more than 200 University of Miami School of Architecture (UMSoA) students, faculty and staff members got together at José Marti Park in Little Havana, to kick off the first U-Serve Day. The participants were able to inventory 439 properties in the neighborhood, encompassing 25 square blocks of territory, using a Geographic Information Systems-based (GIS) smartphone app that was modified by IDSC Software Engineers for this project. In recognition of that effort, and the gift from the School to the City, the City of Miami declared September 24, 2015, to be “Rodolphe el-Khoury Day” and Mayor Tomás Regalado presented the Dean with a Proclamation at the City Commission meeting that morning.

The first Women In Tech Careers event, a panel discussion entitled “Make A Living, Have A Life”, was held at the Toppel Career Center on Tuesday, September 14, 2015, 6:00-9:00 PM. Hosted by IDSC, the event brought awareness to the lack of diversity in the industry, and intentionally shined a light on the challenges facing women in tech careers today. URIDE Demonstrations Now Available

University Research Informatics Data Environment (URIDE) is a software system developed for UM investigators conducting scientific research who want to explore de-identified patient data for designing an experiment or writing a grant proposal. These 30 minute demonstrations will provide details by examples on how to use the application. Space is limited to 10 seats per session. WHAT/WHO: Did you know that in 2013, just 26 percent of computing jobs in the United States were held by women? Several panelists from academia and industry have been invited to the University of Miami (UM) to discuss the challenges facing women in tech careers today, and how we can work together to resolve those challenges. The Women in Tech Careers panelists will outline their paths to success and engage the audience in a constructive discussion on steps that can be taken to increase future prospects for girls and women interested in careers in tech. Identification of BRAF 3’UTR Isoforms in Melanoma

BRAF protein kinase is a crucial player in melanoma, as it belongs to the highly oncogenic RAS/RAF/MEK/ERK signaling pathway (Matallanas et al., 2011), is mutated in about 50% of melanoma cases (Cantwell-Dorris et al., 2011), is causally linked to melanomagenesis (Dankort et al., 2009) and has recently become a valuable therapeutic target against metastatic melanoma (Menzies and Long, 2014). Statewide Research Consortium receives $7.6M

The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine is part of a statewide partnership that has received a three-year, $7.6 million funding award from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, or PCORI, to support patient-centered health care research throughout Florida and the country. ‘Indignant Minnesotans’ remind journalists that data can hurt

Minnesotans got a bitter lesson on the limits of data this week when the Washington Post’s Wonkblog published a map ranking every county in the US by “scenery and climate.” Reporter Christopher Ingraham built the graphic with data from the 1999 “natural amenities index,” a list based on climate, topography, and water. The North Star state didn’t fare well, with all but two of its 87 counties rating low on the list. (Red Lake County nabbed last place.) Residents took to social media to protest.
