Yelena Yesha Receives IEEE Lifetime Achievement Award

Visiting Distinguished Professor Yelena Yesha, PhD, IEEE, received The District of Columbia Council of Engineering and Architectural Societies’ (DCCEAS) Lifetime Achievement Award at their annual Awards Banquet on Saturday, February 22nd in Washington, DC. A black-tie/business formal affair, the banquet took place in the scenic River Room at Tony & Joes Seafood Restaurant located on the Potomac River in Georgetown with a view of the Kennedy Center and the beautiful Washington Harbour fountains. Jia Geng Awarded “AI for Earth” Grant

Congratulations to Jia Geng! A PhD student in the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science Marine Ecosystem and Society program, Jia has been awarded an AI for Earth Microsoft Azure sponsored grant for his project on developing AI systems to automate live feed cultivation for fish hatcheries, entitled: “Developing an Artificial Intelligence System for Rotifer Bachionus spp. Culture to Support Fish Hatchery Technology.” Microsoft’s AI for Earth program awards support projects that change the way people and organizations monitor, model, and ultimately manage Earth’s natural systems.

Collaborative Drug Discovery (CDD) and researchers at the Center for Computational Science of the University of Miami received a National Institutes of Health (NIH) (Small Business Innovation Research) SBIR Award to develop novel assay annotation technology for the CDD Vault leveraging our BioAssay Ontology (BAO). RoboCanes Place 2nd in International Robot Soccer Competition

Saminda Abeyruwan, Justin Stoecker, Andreas Seekircher, and Professor Ubbo Visser accept their trophy at the RoboCup in Mexico City. The College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Computer Science RoboCanes team recently placed 2nd in 3D soccer simulation at the RoboCup 2012 in Mexico City. EPA Gulf Guardian Award 2011 Goes to Felimon Gayanilo

Felimon Gayanilo received the 2011 EPA Gulf Guardian award in the partnership category for his leading role in the development of the data portal for the Gulf of Mexico Coastal Ocean Observing System Regional Association (GCOOS-RA). CCS Researcher receives the CINF-FIZ Scholarship for Scientific Excellence

Barun Bhhatarai, PhD, along with two other junior scientists, were announced the winners of this year’s CINF-FIZ Scholarship for Scientific Excellence, for their outstanding research contributions to chemical information. The honored scientists were invited to present their contributions during the Welcoming Reception of the CINF Division at the ACS Meeting on Sunday, August 28, 2011 and again at the Sci-Mix session on Monday night, August, 29, 2011.
