After creating a national office in Washington, DC, last year, the World Business Angels Investment Forum (WBAF) USA recently established a Miami office and has set their grand-opening ceremony for May 25, on the heels of signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Miami Institute for Data Science and Computing (IDSC). Picture a future where health sensors would be strategically placed throughout a person’s house to check their vital signs each day and to alert them about potential dangers, like a sudden step down to the living room. Outside of the home, sensors could measure local pollen or pollution levels in the air. And for elderly residents, applications streamed through devices like their phone or a smart speaker could remind them to take medications on time. University of Miami’s School of Architecture (SoA), and donor, Urbetica, signed a gift agreement on May 30, 2019, at El Colegio Nacional in Mexico City. (El Colegio Nacional is a Mexican honorary academy with a strictly limited membership, created in 1943 by presidential decree in order to bring together the country’s foremost artists and scientists, who are periodically invited to deliver lectures and seminars in their respective area of specialty.) This gift will provide initial funding to support research on smart city design and planning, extending the work done by SoA’s Responsive Architecture and Design Lab (RAD Lab), in partnership with IDSC’s Center for Computational Science on Zenciti, a planned smart city in the Yucatán peninsula near Merida, Mexico. UM School of Architecture Dean and CCS Smart Cities program director Rodolphe el-Khoury reported in from the inaugural WIEE World Innovation and Entrepreneurship Expo 2018 in Shanghai: “It turned out to be quite a good event and forum. Congratulations to Smart Cities Program Director, and Dean of the School of Architecture, Rodolphe el-Khoury. He and his partners at Khoury Levit Fong aka “KLF”, Robert Levit and Steven Fong, were selected as Official Participants at the upcoming 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial (CAB).
