PyData Miami Conference 1/9-11/2019

PyData Miami 2019 is a 3-day conference on tools and techniques for machine learning, data analysis, visualization, and large-scale data infrastructure. We are an accessible, community-driven conference with talks and tutorials for all skill levels: students, practitioners, and researchers. PyData focuses on open-source computational tools for the Python programming language (such as NumPy, Pandas, and scikit-learn), as well as implementation-agnostic techniques, and other high level numerical languages, such as R and Julia. Report on Student Social Systems Flash Talks

On Friday, September 21st, the CCS Social Systems Informatics program hosted graduate students and postdocs from across the University for an afternoon of networking and flash presentations of their research, at an event titled “Connections, Connections: Student Research in Social Systems @ UM”. A program created in 2015, Social Systems Informatics is about modeling (big) behavioral data to understand human and non-human social interactions. Cleaning Data with OpenRefine & Excel Workshop 11/29-30/2018 Gables…

This workshop introduces participants to techniques for cleaning and transforming data with OpenRefine and Microsoft Excel. Sometimes datasets are created by multiple individuals, and/or created without a clear set of guidelines. The resulting datasets may be difficult to analyze because they lack standardization (i.e., New York City may be listed as “NYC,” “New York, NY”, “New York City”, and “New York City, NY”). In this workshop, participants will learn how to quickly and efficiently find standardization issues and other errors, and how to correct them in bulk, as well as how to enhance existing datasets by adding new metadata fields.
