Genomics meets Big Data in Illuminating the Druggable Genome

It’s part genomics*, part big data, and all about driving discoveries that could someday translate to new treatments for cancer, neurological diseases, addiction, and many other conditions, said Stephan Schürer, Ph.D., CCS Drug Discovery program director, and associate professor of molecular and cellular pharmacology at the UM Miller School of Medicine.

The NIH’s “Illuminating the Druggable Genome“ (IDG) initiative is expected to generate a lot of scientific information from several investigators at leading institutions nationwide. Schürer has been appointed to the IDG’s Resource Dissemination and Outreach Center to organize the incoming data and coordinate project resources. Celebrating Innovation at ACCelerate Festival at the Smithsonian

In Washington, D.C., for a weekend getaway, graduate student Marissa Lisenbee stumbled on a most unexpected sight when she decided to explore the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History last Friday. There, on the first floor, her physical therapy teacher was demonstrating an ingenious device that employs music to help amputees learn to walk again.

“I knew he was working on prosthetics, but I didn’t know what his project was,” said Lisenbee, who is in her second year of UM’s physical therapy program. “And I had no idea they would be there. Scientists Meet With Governor on Climate Change Denial

Florida Governor Rick Scott has been repeatedly quoted as saying “I’m not a scientist” when asked whether he believes in man-made climate change. So,10 Florida scientists sent the Governor a letter referring to the “impact of human-induced global warming.” They mentioned a recent government report that found “unambiguous” evidence that human activities—like the burning of fossil fuels—are the cause. CDD and IDSC receive NIH SBIR Award

Collaborative Drug Discovery (CDD) and researchers at the Center for Computational Science of the University of Miami received a National Institutes of Health (NIH) (Small Business Innovation Research) SBIR Award to develop novel assay annotation technology for the CDD Vault leveraging our BioAssay Ontology (BAO).
