Python Workshop 3/28-29/2016 Gables Campus

Brought to you by IDSC, the Miami Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and the Graduate School, this 2-day workshop will provide you with the basic computing skills and best practices needed to be productive in a small research team. Screening Tools Identify new Cancer-Inhibiting Compound

Using “big data” sets and powerful computational screening tools, researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine have identified a compound that inhibits two different cellular targets in cancer. In a recent study published in Scientific Reports, the researchers described the importance of finding the first-in-class dual inhibitor of the kinase protein EGFR, found in many cancers, and BRD4, a protein that controls the expression of oncogenes, or cancer-promoting proteins. Visualization Goes High-Tech with launch of Viz Lab

An aerial image of a Colombian shantytown appeared on the large display screen with such clarity that the people gathered for the demonstration could identify the types and number of garments hanging from a clothesline on the rooftop of a shack. Network Science Seminar, Thursday 1/28/2016

Network science is a mature discipline, and in both systems biology and systems medicine applications, offers a variety of methodological tools useful for integrative inference purposes, elucidating in particular molecular interactions of various type and complexity. An advantage that networks offer refers to representation, interpretation, and visualization properties in systems’ embedded modular configurations. The clusters of genes or proteins that one observes grouped into communities, are reducing de facto the degrees of freedom and reorganizing cellular networks according to a mix of localized characteristics reflecting gene—gene and protein—protein spatio-temporal associative dynamics. The majority of studies on human cancers published to date focus on coding genes. More recently, however, non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) are gaining growing recognition as important regulatory components.
