Researchers Go High-Tech to Explore the Social World of…

3rd annual Girl Scouts Can draws 38 Participants

On December 4, 2016, IDSC Training & Outreach had the pleasure of welcoming 38 Girl Scouts to the second annual “Girl Scouts Can” Tech Event. The girls were eager and enthusiastic to meet computer scientists and graduate students in computational fields who led them through activities designed to create a scaffold of computational thinking and inquiry. She Innovates Tech Event Saturday 10/29/2016

“She Innovates Tech”—a collaboration between IDSC and CODeLLA—aims to inspire girls in Miami-Dade County between the ages of 9 and 17 to become next-generation innovators, problem solvers, and digital creators. This event is intended to build their skill sets and their confidence, while inspiring and encouraging them to pursue STEM education and careers. According to code.org, Florida had only 2,114 computer science graduates in 2014, of which, only 19% were women. IDSC joins NSF-funded CaRCC Consortium

The National Science Foundation has awarded a consortium of 28 collaborating institutions, led by Clemson University, a $750,000 grant to fund a Research Coordination Network to set up a national forum for the exchange and dissemination of best practices, expertise, and technologies to enable the advancement of campus-based research computing activities. The project, entitled “RCN: Advancing Research and Education Through a National Network of Campus Research Computing Infrastructures – The CaRCC Consortium,” is designed to bring together a wide range of campuses and community stakeholders to form a novel, yet complementary, element of an evolving and expanding national cyberinfrastructure ecosystem. Human vs. Machine-Enhanced Discovery

Join Mark Musen (Stanford), Janice Kranz and Stephan Schürer (University of Miami) for CDD’s Q3 Town Hall Webinar, “Human vs. Machine-Enhanced Scientific Discovery.” We’re seeing ‘Big Data’ everywhere: healthcare, business, sports, traffic control, biology, drug discovery. The ‘behind-the-scenes’ tool enabling the power of Big Data – searching, sharing, visualizing, querying, analyzing – is the Semantic Web (aka ‘Web 3.0’ a term coined by Tim Berners-Lee in a Scientific American article (http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-semantic-web/) in 2001 to describe a web of data that can be processed by machines.) . The major advancement brought about by the Semantic Web is the treatment of data and metadata on the internet as one giant graph of knowledge. Instead of the disjointed islands of knowledge we are used to, with the Semantic Web, databases will be more naturally connected to one other (except where privacy prevents openness).
