Gabriel Reygondeau was four years old when his father took him fishing off the coast of Mexico. His father and his friends hooked a swordfish and reeled it in, pulling it onto the boat and beating it with a club. While the adults celebrated their momentous catch, young Gabriel stood back, traumatized over what he was seeing. “That swordfish died in front of me,” he said. “At that point, I said I would do anything in my power to work for the ocean and preserve the ocean. At least one CCS Member is doing fieldwork for three weeks this summer in the Gulf of Mexico as part of a multi-institution research project to study ocean flow. Funded by BP through the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative, Dr. Tamay Ozgokmen is the project director of the Consortium for Advanced Research on Transport of Hydrocarbon in the Environment (CARTHE) looking at how the Gulf waters transport things like oil or other pollutants.
