Miami Takes Center Stage as Ground Zero for Climate…

UM Provost Thomas J. LeBlanc looked out at the gathering of scientists, researchers, students, and government officials and told them the issues of climate change and sustainability “are first and foremost on everyone’s mind” at the University of Miami. So it was appropriate that on Friday, November 13, 2015, the University’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) co-hosted a conference on climate change with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change—the international Geneva-based organization created by the United Nations to educate the world about climate change and its impact. The Frost Institute for Data Science and Computing (then the Center for Computational Science), the School of Communication and the College of Arts and Sciences held the second VizUM Annual Symposium on Thursday, November 12th, 2015, from 4:00-7:00 PM. The theme was “A Celebration of Infographics and Data Visualization”. The invited speakers Fernanda Viegas, Martin Wattendberg, and Lynn Cherny were pioneers in the field of Visualization. Courtesy of the Graduate School, the University of Miami is now a proud Affiliated Member of Software Carpentry. IDSC is pleased to announce another Software Carpentry workshop in Python at UM. This two-day workshop, jointly hosted by the Miami Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and the Center for Computational Science, will provide the basic computing skills and best practices needed to be productive in a small research team.
