2020-2021 IDSC Fellows Program Deadline Extended

The application deadline for the 2020-2021 IDSC Fellows program has been extended until the spring semester. Please stay tuned for more details. The mission of the IDSC Fellows program is to inspire a new generation of leaders in computational science by offering students the opportunity to work in a broad, cross-disciplinary research setting. Fellowship is awarded to 2 undergraduate students (sophomore level or above), and to 2 graduate students (in their 2nd year or above). IDSC Fellows gain valuable computational skills, and the Program consistently results in continued cross-disciplinary collaborations among the participants and their mentors.

Forecasting the Weather: Safety, Ethics, and Really Big Data…

Hurricanes, floods, and fires, oh my: predicting extreme weather and hazards from days-to-decades is a data-intensive undertaking that is also of tremendous societal interest. We use enormous amounts of data from our best observational estimates of the state of the climate systems and a large suite of state-of-the-art climate models to make these prediction and quantify the uncertainty in these predictions. However, many decision makers and even sponsors challenge us “reduce” the uncertainty beyond that which is scientifically justifiable. This Dialogue will seek participants’ input/critiques on how we ought to confront this challenge based on some examples from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and others. IDSC Partners with NSF Cyberinfrastructure Network FABRIC

The University of Miami’s Institute for Data Science and Computing (IDSC) has joined FABRIC, the advanced U.S. cyberinfrastructure network funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), as a scientific partner. A three-year research award to UM was included in a $3 million NSF grant that will expand FABRIC to four leading scientific institutions in Asia and Europe, and support international research that benefits from real-time sharing of large-scale datasets.
