On March 2nd, 2018, the University of Miami hosted the first Data Intersections symposium. The goal of Data Intersections is to enable a conversation between professionals and scholars from domains that have been deeply transformed by the increasing availability of data and the digital tools used to manipulate it, such as data science, statistics, data journalism, the physical and biological sciences, and the digital humanities. Ontology sounds a lot like a medical specialty—but it’s not related to Oncology, Otolaryngology, or Ophthalmology—except that researchers organizing Big Data in Biomedicine into different ‘ontologies’ or categories could help expedite new drug targets and discoveries in these specialties, and others, in the future.

If you build it, the data will not only come, it will be standardized, accessible, and reusable by researchers around the world. With this in mind, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is creating its Data Commons initiative, and recently invited University of Miami investigators to contribute their expertise. “There is a big effort at the NIH now to bring biomedical research into the data science era. Data science including machine learning is all around us—like recommendation engines for shopping or movies, image and voice recognition, language translation, even the news you see on social media, and your personalized internet search results,” said Stephan Schürer, PhD, Program Director, Drug Discovery, and Associate Professor of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. It’s part genomics*, part big data, and all about driving discoveries that could someday translate to new treatments for cancer, neurological diseases, addiction, and many other conditions, said Stephan Schürer, Ph.D., CCS Drug Discovery program director, and associate professor of molecular and cellular pharmacology at the UM Miller School of Medicine.
The NIH’s “Illuminating the Druggable Genome“ (IDG) initiative is expected to generate a lot of scientific information from several investigators at leading institutions nationwide. Schürer has been appointed to the IDG’s Resource Dissemination and Outreach Center to organize the incoming data and coordinate project resources. For years, global companies like Airbnb, MasterCard, and Fitbit have used “big data” to better understand the dynamic landscape of business and consumer engagement. In South Florida, the trending topic of big data continues to push business leaders toward the incorporation and understanding of advanced computing and algorithms to effectively improve current functionality and growth.
