GIS Day at UM, Wednesday 11/18/2015

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend the new GIS workshop series on a first-come, first-served basis. Each series consists of four workshops and features a different specialty workshop at the end of each cycle. The workshops are intended to be completed sequentially; space is limited to twelve participants, and preference will be given to participants who have attended prior workshops. Sample topics for each session are described at the end of this announcement.

Announcing the third “Research Intersections” event taking place at 5:30 PM on Thursday, November 19 at 5:30 PM, at the University of Miami Hospital Ballrooms (1400 NW 12th Ave, Miami, FL 33136). The theme of this event is “Representing the World: Maps, Models, and Mimeses”. The UM Research Intersections program is a graduate-student-lead initiative that aims to facilitate cross-campus collaborations through a series of networking events at all UM campuses. Software Carpentry “R” Workshop 11/19-20/2015

This two-day workshop, jointly hosted by the Miami Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) and the Center for Computational Science (CCS), will provide you with the basic computing skills and best practices needed to be productive in a small research team. The format is a mixture of short seminars and hands-on practical exercises, and participants are encouraged to help one another, and to try applying what they have learned to their own research problems during and between sessions. UM to Lead NMME Phase-2 Climate Prediction Project

The University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) recently received funding for a project that will improve climate predictions, give better insight to drivers of climate change, and create better climate models and data. Dr. Ben Kirtman, Associate Dean of Research at RSMAS, and Climate & Environmental Hazards Program Director at the Institute for Data Science and Computing, will serve as Principal Investigator for this project. This grant symbolizes a new level of involvement for the University of Miami in the development of powerful climate forecasting tools. City of Miami Proclaims Rodolphe el-Khoury Day

Back on March 25th, more than 200 University of Miami School of Architecture (UMSoA) students, faculty and staff members got together at José Marti Park in Little Havana, to kick off the first U-Serve Day. The participants were able to inventory 439 properties in the neighborhood, encompassing 25 square blocks of territory, using a Geographic Information Systems-based (GIS) smartphone app that was modified by IDSC Software Engineers for this project. In recognition of that effort, and the gift from the School to the City, the City of Miami declared September 24, 2015, to be “Rodolphe el-Khoury Day” and Mayor Tomás Regalado presented the Dean with a Proclamation at the City Commission meeting that morning.

The first Women In Tech Careers event, a panel discussion entitled “Make A Living, Have A Life”, was held at the Toppel Career Center on Tuesday, September 14, 2015, 6:00-9:00 PM. Hosted by IDSC, the event brought awareness to the lack of diversity in the industry, and intentionally shined a light on the challenges facing women in tech careers today. URIDE Demonstrations Now Available

University Research Informatics Data Environment (URIDE) is a software system developed for UM investigators conducting scientific research who want to explore de-identified patient data for designing an experiment or writing a grant proposal. These 30 minute demonstrations will provide details by examples on how to use the application. Space is limited to 10 seats per session. Women in Tech Careers 9/15/2015

WHAT/WHO: Did you know that in 2013, just 26 percent of computing jobs in the United States were held by women? Several panelists from academia and industry have been invited to the University of Miami (UM) to discuss the challenges facing women in tech careers today, and how we can work together to resolve those challenges. The Women in Tech Careers panelists will outline their paths to success and engage the audience in a constructive discussion on steps that can be taken to increase future prospects for girls and women interested in careers in tech.
