2nd VizUM Annual Symposium, Thursday 11/12/2015

The Frost Institute for Data Science and Computing (then the Center for Computational Science), the School of Communication and the College of Arts and Sciences held the second VizUM Annual Symposium on Thursday, November 12th, 2015, from 4:00-7:00 PM. The theme was “A Celebration of Infographics and Data Visualization”. The invited speakers Fernanda Viegas, Martin Wattendberg, and Lynn Cherny were pioneers in the field of Visualization. Girl Scouts Tech Camp 11/8/2015

The 2nd annual Girl Scouts Tech Camp will be held on Sunday, November 8, 2015, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. Interest in this event was enormous! We had 61 registrants within 12 hours of the announcement being made on the Girl Scouts event website, with 20 more on a waiting list. Women in Tech Careers Mentoring Lunch 11/12/2015

Join us for a networking event with the speakers from our 2nd VizUM Annual Symposium Fernanda Viegas PhD and Martin Wattenberg PhD of Google’s “Big Picture” data visualization group, plus UM faculty in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). GIS Day at UM, Wednesday 11/18/2015

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend the new GIS workshop series on a first-come, first-served basis. Each series consists of four workshops and features a different specialty workshop at the end of each cycle. The workshops are intended to be completed sequentially; space is limited to twelve participants, and preference will be given to participants who have attended prior workshops. Sample topics for each session are described at the end of this announcement.

Research Intersections: Call for Presenters 11/19/2015

Announcing the third “Research Intersections” event taking place at 5:30 PM on Thursday, November 19 at 5:30 PM, at the University of Miami Hospital Ballrooms (1400 NW 12th Ave, Miami, FL 33136). The theme of this event is “Representing the World: Maps, Models, and Mimeses”. The UM Research Intersections program is a graduate-student-lead initiative that aims to facilitate cross-campus collaborations through a series of networking events at all UM campuses. Women in Tech Careers Offered Insight and Direction

The first Women In Tech Careers event, a panel discussion entitled “Make A Living, Have A Life”, was held at the Toppel Career Center on Tuesday, September 14, 2015, 6:00-9:00 PM. Hosted by IDSC, the event brought awareness to the lack of diversity in the industry, and intentionally shined a light on the challenges facing women in tech careers today. Women in Tech Careers 9/15/2015

WHAT/WHO: Did you know that in 2013, just 26 percent of computing jobs in the United States were held by women? Several panelists from academia and industry have been invited to the University of Miami (UM) to discuss the challenges facing women in tech careers today, and how we can work together to resolve those challenges. The Women in Tech Careers panelists will outline their paths to success and engage the audience in a constructive discussion on steps that can be taken to increase future prospects for girls and women interested in careers in tech.
