The Institute congratulates Dr. Mingzhe Chen, one of only 119 in the field of Computer Science worldwide and one of 2,670 in the United States to make the Clarivate 2025 list of the World’s Highly Cited Researchers. Dr. Chen was one of three University of Miami professors honored.*
Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers 2025 list identifies and celebrates individuals who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their fields of research. Through rigorous selection criteria and comprehensive analysis, they recognize researchers whose exceptional and community-wide contributions shape the future of science, technology, and academia globally.
A Global Perspective
A total of 7,131 Highly Cited Researcher awards went to 6,868 individuals—some researchers being recognized in more than one Essential Science Indicators (ESI) field. This year’s list included 60 countries and regions, yet 86.1% of awards were concentrated in just 10 of them, and 74.6% in the first five alone highlighting a remarkable concentration of top global research talent.
The United States had the highest concentration of awards in the world with 2,670—37.4% of the world share/up 1% from 2024. Prior to that, the U.S. showed a previous decline each year over the past six years: 43.3% in 2018, 44.0% in 2019, 41.5% in 2020, 39.7% in 2021, 38.3% in 2022, and 37.5% in 2023.
Mainland China maintained second place with 1,406 awards (19.7%). The United Kingdom with 570 awards (8.0%) ranked third, followed by Germany (363 awards), Australia (312), Canada (227), the Netherlands (194), Hong Kong SAR (145), Switzerland (130), and France (121). Singapore, tenth last year, fell off the list, and France moved from ninth to tenth place.
