VizUM is a free, annual data visualization celebration featuring speakers who are pioneers in this domain, and whose vision drives products and styles we see around us daily. IDSC is excited to announce the VizUM 2019 distinguished guest speakers are Jessica Hullman and Alberto Cairo. Join us on Wednesday, December 11, 2019, 4:00-7:00 PM at the Newman Alumni Center for the combined Big Data Conference and VizUM 2019 Symposium. The Big Data Conference portion begins at 2:30 PM. Registration and the Poster Session opens at 12:00.

The goal of the “Your City, Your Neighborhood, and You” Visualization for Civic Engagement Competition is to challenge designers, journalists, data scientists, statisticians, and professionals and scholars in any other field to design either: A data visualization essay, story, or infographic based on publicly available data about Miami, or an exploratory data visualization. Thomas Kohnstamm’s interview of Alberto Cairo for Microsoft is entitled “Show, don’t tell: Alberto Cairo, Power BI & the rise of data journalism“ (what is Power BI). This comes on the heels of the first Digital Humanities + Data Journalism Symposium, organized by Dr. Cairo, and held on September 29-October 1, 2016, here at UM. Kohnstamm’s article illuminates the history of Visualization as visualizations themselves help to illuminate the rise of this fascinating approach. “Visualization no longer just complements a written story. It is the story. The Frost Institute for Data Science and Computing (then the Center for Computational Science), the School of Communication and the College of Arts and Sciences held the second VizUM Annual Symposium on Thursday, November 12th, 2015, from 4:00-7:00 PM. The theme was “A Celebration of Infographics and Data Visualization”. The invited speakers Fernanda Viegas, Martin Wattendberg, and Lynn Cherny were pioneers in the field of Visualization.
