Big Data
Daniel Cohen, Senior Vice President, Digital Payments and Labs for MasterCard Latin America and the Caribbean, offered the keynote address at the 2nd annual Big Data Conference & Workshop, Monday and Tuesday, December 4-5, 2017. In his role at MasterCard, he is responsible for leading the development and commercialization of innovative payment solutions that can be used at the check-out counter, via the web, mobile phone, tablet, and beyond. Previously, Daniel headed MasterCard’s operations in Israel as Country Manager. He was responsible for opening MasterCard’s first office in the country and expanding the company’s local payments footprint. During his time as Country Manager, he led the commercialization of breakthrough innovative payment solutions in the electronic and mobile commerce space. Daniel began his career at MasterCard in 2007, leading prepaid card program initiatives across the globe out of the company’s headquarters in Purchase, New York. Prior to joining MasterCard, he was a Strategy Consultant for BTS where he managed corporate strategy projects for Fortune 500 companies.

Library data are often hard to analyze because these data come from unconnected sources, and the data sets can be very large. Furthermore, the desire to protect user privacy has prevented the retention of data that could be used to correlate library data to non-library data. The research team used data mining to determine library use patterns and to determine whether library use correlated to students’ grade point average. Grants
The University of Miami Libraries has received a two-year $260,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support software development that will expand the functionality of the Cuban Theater Digital Archives. Dr. Mitsunori Oghihara, Associate Dean for Digital Library Innovation and Center for Computational Science Director of Data Mining will oversee the development of various software components that will add metadata extraction from the digital media (videos and graphics), add community tags and a search mechanism, and make a publication tool available that allows scholars to more easily access archived materials for research. This paper “Nextone Player: A Music Recommendation System Based on User Behavior” modeled music listeners listening patterns using a “forgetting” factor—a slow exponential decrease in the freshness of music that was listened to. The effectiveness of the model was confirmed using a simple music jukebox program that makes a recommendation for the next piece to listen to and allows the listener to “skip” to the next song.
