A comprehensive, hands-on overview of an introductory data analysis using Python will cover topics like data types, functions, conditional statements, loops, errors and exceptions, debugging, and some key Python libraries and writing Python programs that will work like Linux command-line tools.

UM and NOAA Launch One-of-a-Kind Climate Collaboration

Residents of Nicaragua were still being pummeled by Hurricane Iota’s powerful winds and life-threatening storm surge on Tuesday when a group of University of Miami scientists and administrators more than a thousand miles away explained to a virtual audience how the work of a newly funded cooperative research institute and the infrastructure that supports it will help improve our understanding of tropical cyclones and other climate events. Introduction to TRITON Workshop-RSMAS Campus

The University of Miami has unleashed Triton to the research community. Using the same AI-optimized architecture as the world’s most powerful supercomputer, Triton is UM’s first GPU-accelerated HPC system, representing a new approach to computational and data science. Built using IBM Power Systems AC922 servers, Triton was designed to maximize data movement between the IBM POWER9 CPU and attached accelerators, enabling students, researchers, and analysts to explore new possibilities.

The CCS Advanced Computing team is offering training sessions on TRITON on the RSMAS and Medical campuses (the Gables Session is past but will be offered again next semester). The training session will include information on how to create a new Triton account, utilize the pre-installed software, and best practices for using the new features on Triton for areas such as Deep Learning and Data Science.

This is a hands-on session, so please bring a laptop.

Ben Kirtman Named American Meteorological Society Fellow

CCS Director of Climate & Environmental Hazards program and RSMAS Professor Ben Kirtman, was named 2019 fellow of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) for his outstanding contributions to weather, water, and climate. New Supercomputer Coming to RSMAS

By early November, the Consortium for Advanced Research on Transport of Hydrocarbon in the Environment (CARTHE), in collaboration with the University of Miami Center for Computational Science (CCS), will acquire a Cray XE6m supercomputer as part of the organization’s goal to develop and improve computational tools to accurately predict the fate of hydrocarbons released into the environment during normal and hurricane weather conditions. Featured Scientist Benjamin Kirtman, PhD

Dr. Benjamin Kirtman is the Program Director for the Physical Sciences & Engineering at the Center for Computational Science. He is also a Professor in the Division of Meteorology and Physical Oceanography at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School for Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS), where he also serves as the Associate Dean for Research.
