Where It Started
First, a little background. Åbo Akademi University (ÅAU) in Turku, Finland is the only exclusively Swedish language, multi-faculty university in Finland (or anywhere outside Sweden). Looking to extend their campus into the immersive, virtual world of XR, a couple of years ago Podcast Host Tobias Andtfolk (ÅAU’s IT Projektchef, and IT Project Manager, ICT Services) bought a couple of headsets and began evaluating them with teacher and students. IDSC Core Faculty Member Professor Mingzhe Chen, a joint hire with the College of Engineering’s Electrical and Computer Engineering Department has received a National Science Foundation Division of Electrical, Communications, and Cyber Systems ( NSF ENG/ECCS) grant for research on connectivity in deploying XR services over NextGen wireless networks.

“Mangrove City“, a VR experience geared towards educating middle schoolers on the crucial role mangrove forests in protecting coastal communities and mitigating climate change, took home the XR prize for the Educate category at the AWE 2023 Awards.
