Participate in panel discussions on capacity building, and cybersecurity, and network with data visualization experts, south Florida private- and public-sector policy makers, entrepreneurs, educators, and researchers, and healthcare providers. Big data, advanced computing, and algorithms are rapidly and profoundly changing every sphere of human activity; Airbnb, Uber, and Fitbit are just a few examples. Today, over 3.6 billion people worldwide are deeply engaged with smartphone devices, wearables, and Internet-of-things technologies while artificial intelligence also promises to create a wave of new products. Advanced computing gives us the ability to reliably and cost effectively store petabytes of data; and machine learning algorithms can crunch through massive datasets in real time to extract business intelligence and socially relevant information, giving firms new marketing tools, like mobile geo-social targeting. These tools have also empowered customers, making them more savvy in their interactions with business. The businesses, nonprofits, health care providers, government agencies, entrepreneurs, and educational institutions that harness these trends have an historic opportunity to gain an advantage over their competitors.

Data Visualization is a burgeoning field of study at the University of Miami and other top academic research institutions. From devising app-based tools, to organizing vast scientific datum into bite-size morsels, data visualizers often begin their career journey as computer scientists, journalists, academic researchers, coders, or graphic designers. The common thread is that they have all developed a keen interest in recasting complex data in visually appealing ways to broaden the understanding of the world in which we live. Bringing data visualization to the Big Data Conference, the VizUM portion of the program will feature distinguished guest speaker Jessica Hullman, PhD, Assistant Professor in Computer Science and Journalism at Northwestern University, and Professor Alberto Cairo, PhD, Knight Chair in Visual Journalism at the University of Miami School of Communication, and Program Director, CCS Visualization.

Keynote Speaker
	Matthew Denesuk Senior Vice President, Data Analytics & AI \| Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. Matt is the SVP of Data Analytics & AI at Royal Caribbean Cruises in Miami, FL. Matt is overseeing the inception, development and deployment of data-driven and AI-based capabilities across the company. He previously was Chief Data Science Officer, and a founder, of Noodle.ai, which provides AI-as-a-Service to enterprises and industrial firms. Prior to that, he was the Chief Data Science Officer and GM of the Data Science of Excellence at General Electric. He also led Smarter Planet Modeling & Analytics at IBM Research, and was a Partner in IBM’s Venture Capital Group. Matt has BS, MS, and PhD Degrees from MIT and the University of Arizona.

	Nicholas Tsinoremas, PhD Vice Provost for Research Computing and Data, and Institute Director \| UM IDSC Dr. Tsinoremas holds faculty appointments in the Miller School of Medicine and the College of Arts and Sciences. He received his B.A. in Chemistry from the University of Athens, Greece, and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Leeds, UK. Before joining the University of Miami, he served as Head of Informatics and Chemoinformatics at The Scripps Research Institute-Florida. In the past, he was Director of Computational Genomics and Genomic Discovery at Rosetta/Merck, where he directed the project that combined data science and computational approaches with gene expression profiling, high throughput screening and genetics to discover, prioritize, and define new drug targets and novel therapeutics. Prior to working for Merck Research Laboratories (MRL)/Rosetta, Tsinoremas was the Vice-President of Genomics at DoubleTwist Inc., where he determined the scientific direction and development of DoubleTwist’s bioinformatics applications and databases. At that time, he also led a team that developed the first annotation of the Human Genome.

	Ashwin Kumar Associate VP, Revenue Cycle Management \| Jackson Health System Ashwin Kumar is the Associate Vice President of Revenue Cycle at Jackson Health System, a nonprofit academic medical system dedicated to building the health of the community by providing world-class care to the residents of Miami, Florida. He received a post graduate degree in Finance and Systems. Prior to joining Jackson Health System, he worked at Deloitte Consulting in the Healthcare Providers segment under the Strategy & Operations practice. Ashwin is an innovative executive with 18 years of experience in healthcare, creating complex tech-enabled solutions to drive process improvement and growth in all Revenue Cycle areas, including Health Information Management, Patient Access, Clinical Documentation Improvement, Revenue Integrity, and Denials Management. His completed projects exhibit successful uses of data extraction, predictive modeling, data intellectualizing, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence to drive process improvements in health care to address issues, prioritize actions, and prevent errors in various areas of hospital operations.
	Roy Lowrance, PhD Founder + CEO \| Applied Data Science, LLC Dr. Lowrance’s career has been in three areas: In IT, he started as a software engineer, then became CIO or CTO at multiple organizations including Capital One, and Reuters. In management consulting, he focused on helping companies like McKinsey & Company and Boston Consulting Group leverage IT in their business strategies. In education, Roy worked with faculty to co-design NYU’s Center for Data Science and a Master of Science in Data Science degree, which was the first on-campus masters degree in data science. He subsequently helped design a series of executive education courses for NYU. Dr. Lowrance is founder of Applied Data Science, LLC, and the co-founder of 7 Chord (AI for Bond Traders). Roy earned his PhD in Computer Science at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at NYU. He graduated with honors as a Baker Scholar with an MBA from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, and was awarded a BA in Mathematics cum laude at Vanderbilt.
	Olivia Ramos Founder and CEO \| Deepblocks Olivia Ramos is an entrepreneur, founder, and CEO of Deepblocks, an artificial intelligence platform consolidating all the tools and processes needed to analyze any real estate project. She is a graduate of all three Singularity University startup programs, GSP, Incubator, and Accelerator, and was the only woman participant in the DARPA Innovation House program. Olivia holds a Master’s of Architecture from Columbia University, a Master’s of Real Estate Development from the University of Miami, a Bachelor’s in Architecture from the University of Florida, and a degree from Design and Architecture Senior High.
	Yuda Saydun Founder and President \| CyVent Yuda is the founder and president of CyVent, a cybersecurity advisory firm and solutions provider that helps security teams accelerate their transition to an AI-driven preventive posture focused on pre-empting breaches. Over his earlier career as an executive at American Express, Tech Data, ClimeCo, and Xerox, Yuda started and scaled multiple businesses, launched dozens of new technology products and oversaw IT service offerings. Yuda holds certificates in data science and cyber security from Johns Hopkins and Harvard, and an MBA from UCLA Anderson, where he was recognized as one of the “Top 100 Inspirational Alumni” of the School’s 75 years. Having been a mentor, founder, officer and investor in tech companies, he is now the Chair-Elect of the Miami-Dade Beacon Council’s Technology Committee, and an advisor at Bioverse Labs.
VizUM Data Visualization Speakers
	Jessica Hullman, PhD Assistant Professor in Computer Science and Journalism, Northwestern University Jessica Hullman is an Assistant Professor in Computer Science and Journalism at Northwestern. The goal of her research is to develop computational tools that improve how people reason with and make decisions from data. She is especially interested in challenges that arise in presenting data to non-expert audiences, where the need to convey a clear story often conflicts with goals of transparency and faithful presentation of uncertainty. Her current research focus is on uncertainty representation through interactive visual interfaces that enable users to articulate and reason about their prior beliefs. Jessica’s research has been supported by a Microsoft Faculty Fellowship, and awards from NSF (CRII, CAREER), Navy, Google, Tableau, and Adobe. Prior to joining Northwestern, she was an Assistant Professor at the University of Washington Information School. Her Ph.D. is from the University of Michigan and she spent a year as a Postdoctoral Scholar in Computer Science at the University of California Berkeley.
	Alberto Cairo, PhD Associate Professor \| Knight Chair in Visual Journalism, UM School of Communication Director \| IDSC Visualization Director \| IDSC Visualization, Data Communication, and Information Design Alberto Cairo is an Associate Professor and Knight Chair in Visual Journalism at the University of Miami. He is also director of the visualization program of UM’s Center for Computational Science. Cairo spent more than a decade working in the news industry, as director of information graphics in publications in Spain and Brazil. He also works as a freelancer and permanent consultant for companies and government entities such as Google and the Congressional Budget Office. Cairo is the author of three books about visualization, ‘The Functional Art’ (2013), ‘The Truthful Art’ (2016), and the upcoming ‘How Charts Lie: Getting Smarter about Visual Information’ (October 2019).
