Data Intersections 2/13/2020

Data Intersections is an annual symposium featuring speakers from the fields of data science, statistics, data journalism, and the digital humanities. The 2020 session theme is “Conversations About the Ethics of Data, Technology, and Design.” Speakers include: Mike Monteiro @monteiro on the design of technologies, and Heather Krause @datassist on the ethics of data analysis and gender. Join us on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at the Newman Alumni Center 3:00-7:00 PM. This event is free and open to the public. Registration opens at 2:30 PM.

Yelena Yesha Lecture 2/5/2020 on Medical Imaging

Artificial intelligence (AI) has great potential to augment the clinician as a virtual radiology assistant (vRA) through enriching information and providing clinical decision support. Deep learning is a type of AI that has shown promise in performance for Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) tasks. A current barrier to implementing deep learning for clinical CAD tasks in radiology is that it requires a training set to be representative and as large as possible in order to generalize appropriately and achieve high accuracy predictions. Lunch & Learn on Brain Networks 1/22/2020

In this session, Dr. Michael Mannino will describe and show how “The Virtual Brain,” a neuroinformatics package, simulates the human brain, using a computational model that explores the dynamics of large-scale brain networks, and information flow between different brain regions underpinning cognitive processes like working memory, attention, and perception. Intro to TRITON Workshop-Medical campus 12/13/2019

The CCS Advanced Computing team is offering training sessions on TRITON at all three campuses. The training session will include information on how to create a new Triton account, utilize the pre-installed software, and best practices for using the new features on Triton for Deep Learning and Data Science.

Poster Winners Announced for Big Data + VizUM 2019

Students, researchers, and patrons from the University of Miami, FIU, Ransom Everglades School, and the local community gathered at Robert and Judi Prokop Newman Alumni Center for the combined annual Big Data Conference and VizUM Symposium, held on Wednesday, December 11, 2019. The event began in the Bruce & Robbi Toll Library with Poster Presentations. This was the event’s first call for posters and cash prizes were at stake!

Meet the 2019-2020 IDSC Fellows on Thursday 1/30/2020

The vision of the IDSC Fellows Program is to inspire a new generation of leaders in computational science to cross the traditional boundaries between disciplines, by equipping them with new cross-disciplinary skills and experience. The Program does this by offering mentorship outside the students’ area of expertise. “IDSC Fellow” is a prestigious designation awarded to two undergraduate students and two graduate students per year. Joseph Brancato to Keynote at Smart Cities MIAMI 2020

The University of Miami Institute for Data Science and Computing and the School of Architecture are pleased to announce Smart Cities MIAMI 2020 Keynote Speaker Joseph Brancato, FAIA, NCARB, Vice Chairman, Gensler. Joe is Managing Principal for Gensler’s Northeast and Latin America Regions, with offices in: New York; Morristown, NJ; Boston; Toronto; San José, Costa Rica; São Paulo; Mexico City; and Bogotá consisting of over 1,300 professionals. He is Co-Chairman of the firm’s Board of Directors, and sits on the Executive & Governance Committee and the Global Practice Committee. With vision and focus, Joe has led Gensler into new markets, providing leadership to the architecture, urban planning and design studios. He provides thought leadership and regularly speaks on topics such as the impact of driverless cars and ride-sharing on urban planning and development, designing future cities, experience-driven design, and the urbanization of suburbia. Mapic Leap “The U Experience” now through 12/6/2019

The U Experience is a immersive augmented reality application that offers the exploration of the University of Miami Coral Gables campus through a lightweight Magic Leap wearable device. The U Experience is available to faculty and students through the fall semester (until December 6) in the Magic Leap Lab located in the Richter Library, room 326.
