On March 2nd, 2018, the University of Miami hosted the first Data Intersections symposium. The goal of Data Intersections is to enable a conversation between professionals and scholars from domains that have been deeply transformed by the increasing availability of data and the digital tools used to manipulate it, such as data science, statistics, data journalism, the physical and biological sciences, and the digital humanities. Ontology sounds a lot like a medical specialty—but it’s not related to Oncology, Otolaryngology, or Ophthalmology—except that researchers organizing Big Data in Biomedicine into different ‘ontologies’ or categories could help expedite new drug targets and discoveries in these specialties, and others, in the future.

The second annual Big Data Conference and Workshop hosted by CCS encouraged business leaders, including UM alumni, to dive into big data. For years, global companies like Airbnb, MasterCard, and Fitbit have used “big data” to better understand the dynamic landscape of business and consumer engagement. In South Florida, the trending topic of big data continues to push business leaders toward the incorporation and understanding of advanced computing and algorithms to effectively improve current functionality and growth. Join us for Flash Talks and Happy Hour! The second meeting of the Social Systems Informatics Members will now take place (reschedule post-Hurricane-Irma from 9/8) on Friday, 12/1/2017 in the Abess Center (Ungar Building 230C-D) from 3:00 to 5:30 PM. Please feel free to drop in during those hours. Refreshments (beer, wine, hors d’oeuvre) will be served. SSI Members will give flash talks (approx. 5 minutes each) on what they are currently working on. You do not need to be an SSI Member to participate. Hope to see you there. GIS Day at the University of Miami will take place on Wednesday, November 15, 2017, from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM at the Shalala Student Center. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend. The featured Keynote Speaker will be Lauren James, Graphics Editor for National Geographic. With a background in studio art, community development, and geography, Lauren is a graphics editor with a focus on cartography at National Geographic.
