2-Day Python Workshop 11/5-6/2015 Medical Campus

Courtesy of the Graduate School, the University of Miami is now a proud Affiliated Member of Software Carpentry. IDSC is pleased to announce another Software Carpentry workshop in Python at UM. This two-day workshop, jointly hosted by the Miami Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and the Center for Computational Science, will provide the basic computing skills and best practices needed to be productive in a small research team. Girl Scouts Tech Camp 11/8/2015

The 2nd annual Girl Scouts Tech Camp will be held on Sunday, November 8, 2015, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. Interest in this event was enormous! We had 61 registrants within 12 hours of the announcement being made on the Girl Scouts event website, with 20 more on a waiting list. We are happy to announce the first seminar as part of the Lunch-bytes Seminar Series this semester at RSMAS. Lunch-bytes were a series of informal seminars that existed from 2010 to 2012, with a focus on various computing topics. Lunch-bytes aims to provide an informal forum for RSMAS students, researchers, and faculty to discuss and exchange knowledge on various computational tools, techniques, and programming languages. GIS Day at UM, Wednesday 11/18/2015

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend the new GIS workshop series on a first-come, first-served basis. Each series consists of four workshops and features a different specialty workshop at the end of each cycle. The workshops are intended to be completed sequentially; space is limited to twelve participants, and preference will be given to participants who have attended prior workshops. Sample topics for each session are described at the end of this announcement.

Announcing the third “Research Intersections” event taking place at 5:30 PM on Thursday, November 19 at 5:30 PM, at the University of Miami Hospital Ballrooms (1400 NW 12th Ave, Miami, FL 33136). The theme of this event is “Representing the World: Maps, Models, and Mimeses”. The UM Research Intersections program is a graduate-student-lead initiative that aims to facilitate cross-campus collaborations through a series of networking events at all UM campuses. Software Carpentry “R” Workshop 11/19-20/2015

This two-day workshop, jointly hosted by the Miami Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) and the Center for Computational Science (CCS), will provide you with the basic computing skills and best practices needed to be productive in a small research team. The format is a mixture of short seminars and hands-on practical exercises, and participants are encouraged to help one another, and to try applying what they have learned to their own research problems during and between sessions. UM to Lead NMME Phase-2 Climate Prediction Project

The University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) recently received funding for a project that will improve climate predictions, give better insight to drivers of climate change, and create better climate models and data. Dr. Ben Kirtman, Associate Dean of Research at RSMAS, and Climate & Environmental Hazards Program Director at the Institute for Data Science and Computing, will serve as Principal Investigator for this project.
