The Center for Computational Science, the School of Communication and the College of Arts and Sciences are thrilled to bring you the second VizUM Annual Symposium, a data visualization celebration at the University of Miami. Two world-renowned professors have been added to the University of Miami Institute for Data Science and Computing’s pioneering faculty roster. Professor Alberto Cairo from the School of Communication has been named Director of Visualization, Data Communication, and Information Design, and Professor Mitsunori Ogihara from the Department of Computer Science has been named Director of Education. A three-way collaborative team between IDSC Director of Visualization, Data Communication, and Information Design, Alberto Cairo (providing art-direction, project-management, etc.), El Universal (the main partner), and Google (who provided data, funding, and some Machine Learning expertise) has won one of the most prestigious award in the field of data journalism: the Sigma Award for their project “Zones of Silence.” Read more “Zones of Silence wins Data Journalism Award” →
Data Intersections is an annual symposium featuring speakers from the fields of data science, statistics, data journalism, and the digital humanities. The 2020 session theme is “Conversations About the Ethics of Data, Technology, and Design.” Speakers include: Mike Monteiro @monteiro on the design of technologies, and Heather Krause @datassist on the ethics of data analysis and gender. Join us on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at the Newman Alumni Center 3:00-7:00 PM. This event is free and open to the public. Registration opens at 2:30 PM.
Students, researchers, and patrons from the University of Miami, FIU, Ransom Everglades School, and the local community gathered at Robert and Judi Prokop Newman Alumni Center for the combined annual Big Data Conference and VizUM Symposium, held on Wednesday, December 11, 2019. The event began in the Bruce & Robbi Toll Library with Poster Presentations. This was the event’s first call for posters and cash prizes were at stake!

“This Hurricane Map Doesn’t Mean What You Think It Means: We use hurricane forecasts to warn people. Why do we misinterpret them so often?” is a motion graphic created by CCS Visualization Program Director Alberto Cairo, along with Tala Schlossberg (NY Times Opinion Visuals Journalist), (“cone of uncertainty”) which appeared online at The New York Times.
