By early November, the Consortium for Advanced Research on Transport of Hydrocarbon in the Environment (CARTHE), in collaboration with the University of Miami Center for Computational Science (CCS), will acquire a Cray XE6m supercomputer as part of the organization’s goal to develop and improve computational tools to accurately predict the fate of hydrocarbons released into the environment during normal and hurricane weather conditions. At least one CCS Member is doing fieldwork for three weeks this summer in the Gulf of Mexico as part of a multi-institution research project to study ocean flow. Funded by BP through the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative, Dr. Tamay Ozgokmen is the project director of the Consortium for Advanced Research on Transport of Hydrocarbon in the Environment (CARTHE) looking at how the Gulf waters transport things like oil or other pollutants. Grants
With the ultimate goal of accelerating the discovery of drugs to regenerate or protect nerves after spinal cord injury, UM Miller School researchers have received a $2.5 million grant to develop a novel database via the Center for Computational Science to enable neuroscientists to search the voluminous and growing number of studies related to nervous system repair, and link relevant data from those studies to other resources. Awards & Honors
Saminda Abeyruwan, Justin Stoecker, Andreas Seekircher, and Professor Ubbo Visser accept their trophy at the RoboCup in Mexico City. The College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Computer Science RoboCanes team recently placed 2nd in 3D soccer simulation at the RoboCup 2012 in Mexico City. Grants
Each year, the National Hurricane Center estimates that tropical storm-related flood damage costs literally billions of dollars. In 2011, it was estimated at $8,410,469,500. In 2005, the year of Hurricane Katrina, that number was $51,173,065,465. So, to have a tool that can help forecast the potential for flooding rise means better preparation and reduced damage and costs. Dr. Benjamin Kirtman is the Program Director for the Physical Sciences & Engineering at the Center for Computational Science. He is also a Professor in the Division of Meteorology and Physical Oceanography at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School for Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS), where he also serves as the Associate Dean for Research. Advanced Computing
Felimon “Nonong” Gayanilo, CCS systems architect (pictured at right), has accepted the position of systems architect for the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative Information and Data Cooperative (GRIIDC) at the Harte Research Institute (HRI) at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi. There, he will lead a technical team to develop a comprehensive research database for the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative that promotes continual scientific discovery and public awareness of the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem. Zhijie Jiang was among several CCS researchers presenting at the 2012 annual meeting of the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics in Charlotte, NC, discussing his updated SNP Array Evaluation Tool and its capability to identify, literally in seconds, a short-list of candidate genes/disorders on runs of homozygosity detected by a clinical SNP array.
