The Institute for Data Science and Computing (IDSC) has appointed Dr. Benjamin Kirtman as it’s deputy director. Dr. Kirtman is a world-renowned research scientist and professor, specializing in climate and atmosphere studies. He came to UM’s Rosenstiel School for Marine and Atmospheric Science in 2007 after leaving his position as a professor at George Mason University, and has since served as the Program Director for Climate and Environmental Hazards at the Center for Computational Science.

Abstract The Drug Toxicity Signature Generation Center (DToxS) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is one of the centers of the NIH Library of Integrated Network-Based Cellular Signatures (LINCS) program. A key aim of DToxS is to generate both proteomic and transcriptomic signatures that can predict adverse effects, especially cardiotoxicity, of kinase inhibitors approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Visiting Distinguished Professor Yelena Yesha, PhD, IEEE, received The District of Columbia Council of Engineering and Architectural Societies’ (DCCEAS) Lifetime Achievement Award at their annual Awards Banquet on Saturday, February 22nd in Washington, DC. A black-tie/business formal affair, the banquet took place in the scenic River Room at Tony & Joes Seafood Restaurant located on the Potomac River in Georgetown with a view of the Kennedy Center and the beautiful Washington Harbour fountains. Generated in vast amounts every day, data is the new coin of the realm, the currency fueling innovation and discovery and changing nearly every field and facet of life. At the University of Miami alone, the amount of data amassed by faculty and staff members searching for medical cures, planning smart cities, predicting extreme weather, and pursuing a myriad of other advances has almost doubled in the past few years. Building on the immense resources and expanding the vision of the Center for Computational Science (CCS), the University has established the Miami Institute for Data Science and Computing (IDSC “i-disc”) to catalyze data-intensive research that will solve real-world problems and enhance the understanding of data science among students and the public. Institute members will help infuse data science into instructional programs across the University, ensuring students graduate with a degree of data-savviness—if not a new Master of Science in Data Science degree. Abstract Major oil spills are catastrophic events that immensely affect the environment and society, yet determining their spatial extent is a highly complex task. During the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) blowout, ~149,000 km2 of the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) was covered by oil slicks and vast areas of the Gulf were closed for fishing. Transcatheter closure of the left atrial appendage (LAA) for stroke prevention has emerged as an alternative to systemic anticoagulation in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and increased stroke risk. Prophylactic occlusion or excision of the LAA during heart surgery in patients with AF has been performed for decades and may be considered in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
